What's Going On?
I hope you are enjoying your summer and having fun with your kids. Summertime is such a good time for living in the moment and pushing pause on our normal stresses. Having said that, I know that the fall looms on the horizon and we are all wondering what will happen. Will we be back in school? What will the schedule be like? What will be the same and what will be different? (Do you feel your blood pressure rising from all the worry?) Know that I am right there with you. COVID-19 has not gone away and life continues to be different. Our emotions zigzag and it seems like we are running hard but getting nowhere fast. As we look to the fall, here are some assurances I can give you.
1. As a district, we are seeking guidance from our state and national authorities. At the end of the day, we follow the lead of the SC State Department of Education, the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, Governor McMaster and our federal authorities. They have provided guidelines and those will be used to develop our plans.
2. We are looking at every possible option. We have considered dozens of plans to determine how best to bring our students and staff members back safely, normally, and quickly (in that priority order.) We are spending hours and hours debating what is best for all our children. We visit and then revisit options just to be sure we don't miss anything. We read and study ideas and plans and data that come from a variety of sources. As always, know that you can email me if you have an idea you think might work. We want your input and have sent surveys to you so please feel free to convey any thoughts you have.
3. We are examining the needs of all the different populations of our students and families and staff members. For every option we consider, we run it through a sift of various family situations to determine if it is an appropriate consideration. We are thinking about what is best for our elementary students versus our middle school students versus our high school students. We try to examine ideas through the lens of a special needs student and an English as a second language student and a gifted student and a health impaired student. We think about the diversity of resources that students have and what resources they need. And we know this: There will not be one plan that meets every one of those needs. We will try to make the wisest choices we can.
4. We will be making decisions sooner than later. We know that you need to plan for your family for the fall. We are balancing the need to take in all the information and input with the pressing need to provide clarity. We will have a plan and it will be a thoughtful one based on all the considerations I've mentioned. We appreciate your support, your input, and quite honestly...your prayers. This is a time when it is a blessing to be #OneTeamOneMissionOne RockHill.
Sincerely,
Rhonda Kelsey, Principal
