7th Grade Updates and Reminders! 10/17-10/21

  • Chromebooks should be charged every night to ensure the battery lasts throughout the day!
  • Water bottles should be stored in lockers at all time. Students can ask to get a drink if they are thirsty, but with our new Chromebooks, water bottles are not allowed in the classroom.
  • Check Skyward and the homework calendar frequently for missing and current homework assignments, talk to your child about their work.
  • Please remember that although you can email your students, absences and early pick-up information must be reported through the office. Please call the Yorkville School office.

Character Education: Growth Mindset

This week we focused on positive self-talk with students. Next week our theme is "The Meaning of Smart". Research shows intelligence grows as we learn new things and struggle with our mistakes. Learning from mistakes creates new connections in the brain! Your intelligence grows as you challenge yourself with new ideas and concepts. So "smart" means you make mistakes and learn from them. Smart does NOT always mean knowing the answer or getting good grades.

So Why Socktober?

Because every night in the U.S. an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets and need simple things, like socks, to help get them through the night. Plus the number one needed clothing item for those in need is new socks, but people very rarely ever donate new socks to the homeless! Please join Yorkville Student Council in making the 2nd year of soctober even more successful than last year! Please bring in new socks to donate from Wednesday, October 12th-Thursday, October 27th. A barrel will be available outside of the main office! Thanks in advance!

This week in 7th grade ELA, we continued with our novel the Outsiders and were able to read Chapters 9 and 10. This week we talked about some of the universal themes found in the Outsiders which was a new concept for most. Theme will be discussed throughout the year in all of our units and readings. This is not an easy concept to grasp but as we started doing different activities, the idea really started to flow. We changed up our article of the week this week by having one student write an article and share it with a partner who read and reported on the article. It was great to see the students start to be reflective about their own writing and each others. For grammar we did comma usage review, students needed to be refreshed on these rules and the more they practiced the more they understood. Take time to do some independent reading this weekend and please do not forget to fill out your book talk online! Happy weekend, enjoy the Fall weather!

Pre Algebra spent the week working on Integer Exponents and Order of Operations. Two concepts that will be used throughout the year. We will complete our quiz on Monday & then begin work on Scientific Notation with both negative and positive powers. You can expect that your child will normally have a quiz once every week or every week-in-a half. Have a good weekend!

Algebra wrapped up Unit 1A with a test on Tuesday and Wednesday. There are still a few students that need to complete this test. We ended the week by beginning module 4 in unit 1B. This module will focus on solving multi-step equations. We will also solve and graph inequalities. The algebra tests should all be finished by Friday and I will get them corrected over the weekend. Please check skyward for updated grades. Have a great weekend.

This week in U.S History we began looking at Chapter 11. Our first focus was looking at the Industrial Revolution. We discussed how the Industrial Revolution developed in the United States especially in the New England region. We talked about how the development of machines and the factory system led to people leaving the farms and working in factories. Next week we will look at lesson 2 which focuses on people moving west. We will talk about how they used different modes of transportation to move west. Have a great weekend. Mr. Johnsen

¡Hola! This week in Spaninsh finished and presented their "Saludos" or greetings conversation. Students did a terrific job presenting information about themselves to their peers. Students talked about their name, how they are doing, where they were from, and how old they were. We spent the entire week practicing the questions, writing answers in complete sentences, and perfecting our conversation. Check out Schoology and Google Classroom for the final grade. Next week we will begin our numbers unit.

Physical Education and Health News and Updates

Amanda Peterson amanda.peterson@yorkville.k12.wi.us

This week in health the 7th graders worked really hard on putting together their newscast scripts on their unintentional injury topics. The students will be rehearsing on Tuesday and presenting their newscasts on Thursday of next week. It is always a great learning experience and an entertaining time for all of us!

This week the 7th graders had the opportunity to play Angleball, which is very unique and new game to our school as of last spring. We also started our basketball unit with ball handling, dribbling, jump stops, pivoting, knockout, passing, and 2on 2 basketball games. We are looking forward the benefits from this cardiovascular endurance activity!
