The Fairview Connection

MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
We are so proud of our 5th graders for their courage and hard work in performing the 5th Grade Musical, Space Pirates, this week. All six classes did an amazing job with their performance and it was so enjoyable to be able to see all of our students playing meaningful roles in each show. Special thanks to Mrs. Happ for all of her planning and overall dedication to making this show a memorable experience for our students. She continues to instill increased confidence and a love for music in our students each day, and we appreciate all of her efforts! Today also marked the culmination of The Cereal Effect service project. Thank you to all families who were able to donate cereal boxes to Fairview to give to the Mount Prospect Food Pantry to support families who need them. This was a great way to help our students learn more about the importance of giving to and supporting others. We collected 840 total cereal boxes, which was just about double our goal! The students also enjoyed the domino activity we did with the boxes throughout the school. Here is the video from this morning for you to enjoy. Please share it with your children so they can see the entire course! Looking forward to the weeks ahead, please take a moment to read below for school information and updates about upcoming Fairview events. Click here for this past week’s edition of the FES news as well. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Disability Awareness Week: Next week, District 57 will celebrate Disability Awareness Week. At Fairview, we will take time each day during morning announcements and through classroom activities to raise student awareness about different disabilities that people face and the ways they work through challenges. Our goal is to raise awareness and empathy while also inspiring students with stories of courage, perseverance, creativity, and achievement. Special thanks to Fairview special education teacher, Katianne Olson, for her leadership efforts in planning for Disability Awareness Week.
Car Line Drop Off and Pick Up: Lately we have been seeing some safety and procedural concerns in the north lot during car line drop off and pick up. Parents, when picking your children up, please pull all the way forward and wait until you reach the curb area by Mr. Costello where all the students are waiting before having your children enter or exit your vehicle. When students enter and exit early, it backs up the line causing delays. Additionally, once some parents have their children, they pull around the cars in front of them creating a double lane of traffic in the north lot, which creates a safety issue. There should never be a second lane of traffic for the safety of our students and parents. When we all follow the procedure, it creates a safe and happy environment for all involved, so I appreciate your help!
Parent Feedback for Next School Year: As we get closer to the end of the year, the Fairview staff will complete the sectioning process for next school year. This process consists of teachers carefully analyzing student needs and creating balanced class lists for the following school year. There are several factors that are considered when creating balanced class lists. Students are placed so that they have a cluster of other peers with them that learn at their same academic levels to ensure an appropriate peer group exists for small-group instruction. Teachers carefully consider the types of support that each student needs when generating balanced class lists as well. Once each grade level team has created class lists that are balanced and make sense from an instructional standpoint, I carefully analyze each list and assign a homeroom teacher. I may make a small number of changes to the teacher-created lists if needed. I’d like to invite you as parents to take a part in this process, as you know your child best. If you’d like to share your feelings about the learning environment that will best suit your child’s learning needs, please fill out the form found at this link. DO NOT SPECIFICALLY REQUEST TEACHERS BY NAME. Such requests will not be honored. Rather than stating the teacher you want, provide me with information about your son or daughter and how you feel they learn most effectively. I will read through every feedback form I receive carefully and take your input into account when making final teacher assignments. Please submit this form no later than Friday, May 5th. If you have more than one child who will attend Fairview next school year, please fill out the form separately for each child.
April Falcons Read - School Window Poetry Walk: To celebrate poetry month, the Fairview staff wanted to create a way for families to get out and enjoy the changing weather while being involved with our school. Continuing through the end of April, families are welcome to walk around the outside of our building to view the variety of poems we have posted and decorated by students on our exterior windows. Feel free to stop by Fairview with your family for this poetry window walk anytime after school or on the weekend. We hope you enjoy it!
Capannari’s Coolest School Contest: Fairview's date for the annual Capannari's Coolest School Contest is coming up on Tuesday, April 25th. This is a fundraiser for the PTO where we receive a percentage of all sales on our assigned date. Click here for more details. This year, they are bringing back celebrity scoopers for the first time since before the pandemic. This is where staff is invited to scoop ice cream and connect with the families that attend. See this link for more information on who is planning to help out as a celebrity scooper for your planning purposes.
Please contact Julie Manis (jmanis@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
