MClass Reading Test Wrap Up
Our one-on-one middle of the year reading assessments have come to a close, and I could not be more pleased! Every single student has shown growth! I have enclosed your child's results in today's folder. Please do not think that these assessments are stressful for your child. In fact, it's just the opposite. They are literally begging to come to the back table and read aloud to me. Believe me, they can feel themselves getting better. For me--as their teacher--it was a very labor-intensive task, but more rewarding than you can imagine. Always remember...the single most important thing you can do to make your child a better reader is to see that (s)he is reading nightly at home. The research I've shared with you below shows concrete evidence of this claim.
Idita-Boxes: Tinkering Along The Trail!
Believe it, or not, engineering is already part of the DNA of young learners! Elementary school is the perfect time to introduce the engineering design process through simple S.T.E.M. activities, because it builds on children’s natural curiosities to create. That’s why I created S.T.E.M. boxes where students are provided materials to try to build various artifacts associated with the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. I wanted to provide an invitation for children to explore and engineer through play. Make sure you check out some of the results of their "tinkering" in the photos below.
2nd Day S.T.E.M. Day
Speaking of S.T.E.M... Once again, we gathered with our grade level friends for another day of learning where students moved through many S.T.E.M.-related learning stations. For instance, students designed and created a life-sized dog sled to correspond with the upcoming Iditarod race. Also, with Valentine’s Day being on Thursday, they revealed secret Valentine messages that they later realized were the result of a chemical reaction. Additionally, they solved the mystery essential question, “Why can’t airplanes fly into space?” as they built their own “V-Wing” gliders, performed flight tests, and experimented with their design. These are just a few. Again, check out some of the photos below of this day of learning.
Jump Rope for Heart Update
Can you believe it? We've already exceeded our online goal of $3,000. With the event a full week away, we've already raised $4,040. Please keep the momentum going until the actual event next Friday. The generosity of our small community never ceases to amaze me. We just cannot thank you enough for your cooperation with this.
Valentine's Day
On behalf of the kiddos, I want to extend a hearty thank you to those of you who so kindly provided items for our special snack on Valentine's Day. You wouldn't believe how excited and grateful they were for each and every Valentine they received.
CHILDHELP: Speak Up Be Safe
During the first week of March our students will be participating in Speak Up Be Safe, a personal safety program. You are able to learn more about SUBS here. You only need to return the enclosed form if you do NOT want your child to participate in the program.
Try Hockey for Free!
Is your child interested in hockey. If so, (s)he is in luck! The Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford is hosting a Try Hockey for Free Day. This event is designed to provide kids, between the ages of 4 to 10, a completely free experience to try youth hockey. A limited amount of equipment will be available to borrow. Top coaches will be on the ice to assist your child in learning the basics. Your son or daughter does not need any previous skating or hockey experience. You'll find more information in today's folder, or click here to register.
Basket Bash
Mark your calendars for the 20th Annual Basket Bash on Tuesday, April 9th. We are asking for your help with this highly profitable fundraiser by requesting $5.00 from each student's family. This will enable us to put together a themed basket to be raffled off at the bash. Money will need to be submitted by Friday, March 8. Thank you so much for your help.
Next Week's Share Topic
To celebrate Presidents’ Day, choose one president. Find a few facts and maybe a picture of that president. A timeline would be one wonderful way to organize his life. Libraries, encyclopedias, and the Internet are all great places to start your research.
