We Really, Really Need PTSA officers for next school year
Even if you are just thinking about it, let us know. We can answer questions and talk about what is involved.
At our June Meeting
This is our last meeting of the school year. We'd like to take some time to reflect on the year, what we have accomplished, what we would like to improve on, where we would like to go in the future. We'd also like to take a moment to do some appreciations. And we will spend a few minutes debriefing the senior celebration. There is also one teacher grant request to consider.
We know it's a busy time and attendance at the PTSA meetings has been very low the last few months. Everyone is pretty tired of virtual meetings. We thought about meeting in person this month but with Covid numbers on the rise, it doesn't make sense. Consider coming to the June meeting so we can be together as the school year comes to the end.
What Happened at our May Meeting?
Jamaal Tibbs who is the District & Family Liaison for Portland Public Schools came to our meeting in May. He told us about his role in the district and shared about a new Parent University that will be designed to educate and empower PPS parents to collaborate with school staff as partners, advocates and lifelong teachers in their child's education through educational workshops/courses and leadership opportunities. He hopes to get parents thoughts and ideas about the type of courses/workshops that they would want developed in Parent University. Jamaal's enthusiasm and commitment was wonderful to witness!
Jefferson Modernization Update
Upcoming Jefferson Town Hall
The next Jefferson Modernization Town Hall will be on Wed., June 15th 5:00 - 6:00p.m. @ Jefferson (Room Location TBD)
Jefferson Modernization Design Team has been selected.
From the PPS website:
"Bora Architecture & Interiors and LEVER Architects have teamed up for the Jefferson High School Project. This dynamic partnership brings an unmatched, long-term commitment to North/Northeast Portland. Bora has deep K-12 experience and a strong history of successful projects with PPS, and is a national leader in the design of performing arts spaces. LEVER, based in the Jefferson neighborhood, has recently completed the Meyer Memorial Trust Headquarters. Bora and LEVER are joined by Colloqate Design, who will lead the team’s Design Justice-based community engagement process. All three firms are committed to the creation of a vibrant, sustainable, and resilient high school that reflects the values and aspirations of the community."
The Jefferson Comprehensive Planning Committee has been formed. The Jefferson Comprehensive Planning Committee (CPC) is a group of school and community stakeholder representatives who will work together to help provide feedback for the Jefferson Comprehensive Plan. CPC members synthesize community-wide input and share the evolving details of the project with others in the community. The Committee includes parents, teachers, students, alumni, PPS staff and partners, community representatives and a school board member. Their first meeting was on Wednesday, June 1st. Here is a link to the presentation from that meeting:
Senior Celebration!!!
After 6 months of planning, Senior Celebration finally happened! On Friday, June 3rd, after the senior awards assembly, our graduating seniors enjoyed a little party in their honor hosted by the PTSA.
Each student received a Jefferson Class of 2022 hoodie. There were over 50 fabulous raffle prizes from $50 gift cards to high-end wireless headphones to gift packages like a Trail Blazer team signed basketball and TB cap. In addition, there was a grand prize of a brand-new laptop worth over $800! There was also a carnival prize wheel for all. Dutch Bros gift cards, house plants and candy bars were the most popular. There was a summer reading station with an impressive selection of books donated by the Multnomah County Library. Photographer, Tim Horn, was there to capture the moment. Mississippi Pizza Pub donated 15 pizzas and we purchased fired chicken wings from Jack's at the Alberta Street Market. Island Nectar Hawaiian Shaved Ice Cart served up delicious shaved ice.
This event could not have happened without a lot of planning and help. Thanks to the many volunteers and staff who gave their time and skills. And thank you to all of the donors, who are listed below. If you happen to be visiting any of these businesses, please give them a shout out for us.
We appreciate everyone who helped to make this event a success and
show our seniors how much we value their accomplishments!
We continue to accept donations to offset the costs of the event, at:

Volunteer Opportunities - during the summer
THROUGH THE SUMMER . . .
FOOD PANTRY
Every Friday. There is set up, distributing and clean up. The time range is 11:00-3:00 or so. We could use help for all or part of this block of time. This is a very rewarding volunteer opportunity.
CROWD MANAGEMENT SERVICES
There are some great concert opportunities coming up. Contact Georgie Honl, if you are interested.
CMS volunteer security for various events including Edgefield concerts. When one of our community members volunteers, they give a donation to the PTSA. The work is light security and you have an opportunity to watch the game, concert or performance. We will send out communications as these opportunities come up. If you think you might be interested, let us know and we will be sure to contact you when we know which events we will be participating in. Volunteers can be 17 years old and up.
