A Message From Heather Patterson, GRHS Principal

Happy Sunday GRHS Longhorns,

I am super grateful for another weekend of amazing weather. I hope you took a little time to slow down, rest, and enjoy this "blessing" with your family and friends before we hit the ground running for another full week of Longhorn happenings!

Tomorrow (Monday) is yearbook picture day for Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshman.

Attention Seniors! 76 of you (that are 18 years old by November 8th) have registered to vote. Great job! If you missed this during his class presentations, you have one more chance tomorrow during all lunches! Stop by Coach Baker and Coach Rodriguez's voter's registration table outside the cafe to make this happen!

Wednesday is PSAT day for Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshman. Seniors stay tuned for the details on what you will be needing to complete that day, since you will be the only ones NOT testing. FYI: Attendance still counts that day.

Thursday Spirit Day - "Beat the Storm" by wearing rain gear - bust out those ponchos and rainboots as we gear up to beat HighTower on Friday Night! Advisory with the MOST participation wins a prize!

Weekly ID Reminder:

ID's MANDATORY! $5 replacement charges in place now. The first free ID (lanyard and protective case) have all been passed out. This MUST be worn visibly on the top half of your body EVERY DAY! I have been announcing this EVERY SINGLE MORNING and periodically through the day for the past 4 weeks. If you do not have one, this is on you. You have had MANY opportunities to correct this, so now it's your turn to be responsible. Please scan the QR code in this newsletter, in the classroom, or hanging in the front of the school to buy one. We will continue to do ID sweeps, and anyone without one will be charged $5 and given a new one. This is NOT optional, as it is part of dress code. If you keep losing it you will KEEP being charged. You (and your parents) will be getting weekly "fine" email reports, and your parents will be called at 3 weeks and 6 weeks. Not paying is not an option, and there will be a hold placed on your final semester grades and exemptions will NOT be an option.

Calling all GRHS Math Wizards! Let's have the GR-eatest showing in Chicago...4 qualified last year....the MOST in LCISD! Let's do it again!

Here is a little MathCON history! In 2019-2020, before our world shifted due to Covid, GRHS had 11 finalists and 47 alternates. Unfortunately, the finals competition was cancelled and did not return until this past school year.

This past year, Ms. Guidry once again spearheaded the participation of 1,084 students in the first round of the MathCON competition, which equated to 43% of our entire district participation. Her efforts resulted in 4 students qualifying as finalists, 26 students identified as alternates, and 353 students earning an "Outstanding Performance" by MathCON.

During the three years that the district has competed in MathCON GRHS has produced 25 finalists that competed in Chicago! Thank you, Rachel Guidry, for being a champion for students and for seeing how life changing this competition can be for our Longhorns!

RESTROOM ZONES - KNOW THE RULES!

Big picture

RESTROOM ZONES ARE IN EFFECT NOW!

We have created new colored restroom passes for students to use that will coordinate with the hallway they have class in. There is a designated nearby restroom for every two hallways.

This will serve three purposes:

  1. It will keep students closer in proximity to their scheduled classroom which aligns with our safety and security plan.
  2. Cuts down on lost instructional time, as they tend to wander and meet up with friends, instead of actually using the restroom and getting back to class.
  3. It is easier to track (and saves us precious time) when we have to use the cameras to identify vandalism done to the restrooms. (FYI: this results in an ALC placement)

YELLOW ZONE = 1300 & 1500 Hallway/Classrooms (downstairs)

BLUE ZONE = 1400 & 1600 Hallway/Classrooms (downstairs)

GREEN ZONE = 2100 & 2300 Hallway/Classrooms (upstairs)

PURPLE ZONE = 2000 & 2400 Hallway/Classrooms (upstairs)

This is now an expectation because we went over it all last week! Hallways and restroom doors will also be labeled with the designated COLORED RESTROOM ZONE SIGNS to help assist and reinforce students understanding of this new rule.

*Any student found NOT in their correct "zone" starting Wednesday will be assigned consequences.

*No other restrooms should be used. If you are at lunch, you will use the restrooms right beside the cafeteria. If you are in PE/athletice/dance you will use the gym/locker room restrooms. No other students should be in these restrooms throughout the day.

WEARING YOUR ID IS MANDATORY EVERY DAY FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS. $5 REPLACEMENT CHARGE

Student badges will serve as the student ID and SmartTag all in one card. With this ID our GRHS students are able to ride the bus, purchase breakfast/lunch, check out library books, able to use their personal devices (phones/airpods, etc) during lunch and advisory.

Refusing to wear your ID visibly on the top half of your body, is not an option, and will result in the consequences stated on the consequence chart below. Please make sure you are wearing your OWN ID.

Every GRHS student has been gifted an ID, protective plastic cover, and lanyard. It is imperative that our Longhorns adhere to this expectation, as this is part of the daily dress code for staff and students. If you need another badge or lose this one there is a $5 replacement cost. This is NOT optional, it is part of dress code. You can pay by cash or it will be charged to your student library account, for EACH replacement you need. Please note that a hold will be placed on your semester grades, transcripts, and exemptions if this fine is not cleared.

Need a REPLACEMENT ALREADY?

If you are needing to PURCHASE ANOTHER student ID, please use the QR code (above) to request one. You can either pay $5 cash when you pick it up, or we will charge your school library account if you do not have cash. Emails will be sent in Skyward to parent and student emails each time you are charged.

Please Review the Early Pick Up Procedures!
