Chem 1 in Action
Chemistry I Honors classes applied their knowledge of separation techniques to a real world situation. They were tasked with developing methods of separating the fat from the lean in a sample of ground beef to then determine if the fat percentage correlated to the package label of 20% fat. They then needed to recalculate the cost of ground beef based on price per pound of lean -- which is a more realistic value based on how many folks cook ground beef and drain the fat before using. Teams developed their own procedures after researching contents such as cooking techniques to reduce fat in ground beef as well as the melting point of beef fat.

CLASS OF 2023
SENIORS - IT'S TIME TO ORDER!
It's time to order your diplomas and caps & gowns for Graduation! To secure yours, you will need to do the following 2 things. Please note the deadlines.
For Your Diploma --> Proof Your Name in PowerSchool
This is the name that will be printed on your diploma so please take a minute to log in to your account to ensure your first, last and middle name are spelled correctly. Don't use the phone app to view your name. It's not as robust and does not display middle names. Please use your chromebook or laptop to review. Deadline to report an error is Wednesday, 11/30. There is no charge for diplomas. The district purchases a diploma for each graduating senior.
How to Order Your Cap & Gown
Check for the email from Mrs Bedard that was sent last week for the link to order. Sizing is not universal. You'll need to enter your height and weight so the right size is ordered for you. Deadline to submit your order is Wednesday, 11/30.
* Please note, if you do not submit an order, you will not receive a cap and gown.
There is no charge for your cap & gown. They are paid for out of class dues so be sure to check in with any of your class officers to make sure you're up to date with your dues. Caps & Gowns will be distributed at graduation practice in May.
Any questions reach out to Mrs Bedard, tbedard@millisschools.org

The ChemClub along with the Chemistry II class hosted Ms. Merusi’s and Mr. Collazo’s grade three classes last week in Room 109 at the High School. The 3rd grade students came over to explore HS student designed lab experiences around weather phenomena, including erosion, fog and rain in a beaker, and modeling conversion currents. Veterans Visit MHS
Today, we salute those who have served and continue to serve our country. This week, our students were able to sit down with a group of veterans/active military members who volunteered their time to participate in the annual Veterans Day Interview Project, organized by Mr. Fallon. A HUGE thank you to the 12 veterans/active military that came in to speak to our students. We thank you for your service, and for enlightening our students on what you have done in your roles with our nation's military!

Building the Sets
On Friday, November 4th, the Drama Club built the set for their upcoming performance with the help of Dr. Joel White (retired HS physics teacher). Shannon Graham (stage manager) will begin painting and wallpapering this week to make it look like the inside of the Starkweather Mansion. Victoria Bartley (director), Kayla McCarter Walsh, Amany Ferrimy, Kristina Tavarez, Chace O’Connell, Shea Ferrantino, Jack Catalano, and Andrew Maher were also there to assist.
Message from the Nurse
Starting next week, our school nurse, Lynn Molinari, will be conducting postural screenings for students in grade 9. These screenings will be conducted together in the privacy of the school Health Office. The purpose of the postural (Scoliosis) screening is to find early signs of possible spinal problems. If the nurse has any concerns she will notify you. If your child has already been screened by your doctor and you wish to opt out of this screening or any of the screenings please email Lynn Molinari at lmolinari@millisschools.org.
Physics Classes in Action
This past week, students in Mr. Brownell's Conceptual Physics class gathered data on the range of marshmallows shot from a marshmallow cannon with respect to the launch angle. Students from Physics I Honors measured distances through the school hallways in order to identify given locations around the school with an appropriate "position vector."
Ms. Ziemba's U.S. History Classes Create System of Government
Earlier this week, students in Ms. Ziemba’s U.S. History classes stepped into the shoes of the framers of the U.S Constitution to revise the Articles of Confederation. The simulation was intense but the delegates eventually agreed on the new system of government.
AP HUG Gets Creative
This week, students in Mr. Bigelow's AP Human Geography classes completed religious dodecahedrons as part of their unit on world religions.

Parent/Guardian - Teacher Evening Conferences on 11/17
Thanks to all the parents/guardians that participated in last Wednesday's first round of conferences. Millis High School will be hosting one more parent/guardian conference opportunity on the evening of November 17, from 6-8pm (this is a regular school day for students). Conferences can be done virtually through Google Meet, or in person, depending on parent/guardian preference.
Parents can sign up for appointment slots with their students' teachers by accessing the link below and selecting the appointment slots on November 17. You simply select the teachers you would like to set up conferences with by clicking on their appointment link in the Google Sheet below, and then scroll through their appointment calendars to choose an available time that works for you on November 17. Once you select an appointment slot, you will be sent a Google Meet link for your conference meeting as the default. If you would prefer to meet in person with the teacher, please send an email to that teacher or note that in your conference sign-up (email addresses are listed on the document). If you do not send an email requesting an in-person meeting, the teacher will assume you are meeting on Google Meet.
Appointment slots are 10 minutes long and it is important that parents/guardians are on time for their conferences, as once the 10 minute appointment is up, the teacher will be moving to their next virtual or in-person conference.
As always, it is important that parents/guardians and teachers communicate about the academic, social and emotional well being and progress of individual students. We hope many of our parents will be able to meet with their students' teachers. Please use the link below to set up your appointments. If for some reason you are having a difficult time selecting an appointment slot, please email the teacher directly to set up an appointment time.

Picture Make-Up Day
Attention Parents: Message from the Tech Department
Good afternoon Millis families. I wanted to provide you with some information regarding the ChromeBook that your child has been assigned. We have seen an increase in the number of requests to borrow chargers or devices themselves due to them being lost, broken, or not charged. Many of those items loaned out never return or are held onto for a significant period of time. At this time we are not able to support any requests for chargers and have limited capabilities to provide loaners. We would like to reserve those loaners for students that need one in case of device repair rather than forgotten or not charged devices.
You may still purchase insurance for the remainder of the school year via the following link: https://securranty.com/millisps. Coverage is $34.95 for the school year 2022-2023 and is highly recommended. This insurance does not cover chargers.
Below you will see a table indicating the cost to replace the devices with no insurance as well as the cost to replace chargers. If you need to have a charger replaced, you can purchase one on your own or you can make a check out to Millis Public Schools and write Charger in the memo line. Checks can be brought to the tech services office in exchange for a new charger.
Replacement Costs:
Chromebook: $239
Chromebook charger: $30 - HP x360 Charger (link if you would like to purchase your own)
Thank you very much!
