PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Families-
Welcome to October! We have a lot of things happening this month. We have our earthquake drill, book fair, conferences, Halloween parties and our Fall Festival. It is a busy month!
Earthquake Drill
Our earthquake and evacuation drill will take place on October 18. Students and staff will talk about this drill before it takes place. Our goal is to help students feel safe and know what to do in an emergency.
Conferences and Book Fair
Our book fair begins Monday, October 16. This is always a fun event for both students and parents. Parents can visit the book fair during conferences Wednesday night and all day Thursday until 7 pm.
If you have not already signed up for a conference, you are encouraged to do so. Your participation in conferences is vital to the success and growth of your child.
You can use this link or copy and past this link (https://instant-scheduling.com/sch.php?kn=1733369&typId=58576&step=2). If you are still not able to sign up, please contact your child’s teacher.
Celebrating Halloween and our Fall Festival
At Nancy Ryles, we have a tradition of celebrating the fall season and Halloween by wearing costumes and celebrating with a class party. This year our celebration will take place on Friday, October 27. Our NRCO will be providing Krispy Kreme donuts that day. If you have allergy concerns, please notify your child’s teacher.
Students are welcome to wear costumes or pajamas that day. Costumes need to be safe and appropriate. No weapons, no masks, no blood and costumes should be age appropriate. Classroom teachers may ask students to remove all or part of their costumes if they become a distraction to learning. I encourage parents to send additional clothing with your child that day as some students realize their costumes are not as comfortable as they think. Students are not provided time to change prior to the school parade that begins at 2 pm. Classroom parties will begin immediately after the parade.
October 27 is also our Fall Festival and Carnival. Students are welcome to wear costumes to this event as well. This event begins at 5 pm. Thank you to our NRCO and our many volunteers who help to make these events possible.
Students are NOT allowed to wear costumes on Tuesday, October 31.
National Bullying Prevention Month
On Monday we kicked off National Bullying Prevention month. We want students to feel safe while they learn and play at school. One of the things we are really working to teach kids is the difference between MEAN behavior, RUDE behavior and BULLYING behavior. Students often confuse mean or rude behavior with bullying behavior. We want to help them learn the difference. Towards the end of the month, we will ask students if they can pledge to SPEAK UP when they see bullying. REACH OUT to others who are bullied. And BE A FRIEND whenever they see bullying.
You are encouraged to reviewing the information below at home.
IS IT BULLYING?
When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s RUDE.
When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s MEAN.
When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it, even when you tell them to stop or show them that you’re upset, that’s BULLYING.
Class Sizes
As many of you have noticed, this year our class sizes are lower than we have seen in recent years. Some of this is due to the fact that when our school opened in September we were about 50 students below our projection; the other reason is that we have 5 teachers in our building that are funded through the Local Option Levy. This levy expires at the end of the current school year. In May, the Beaverton School District will be putting another Local Option Levy out for voter approval. Without our levy, we will reduce our faculty by 5 certified positions beginning next school year.
Thank you again for supporting our school community, I look forward to seeing you throughout the month.

Art Lit: Our first artist of the year is: Grant DeVolson Wood. (1891 –1942). He was an American painter best known for his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest, particularly American Gothic, an iconic painting of the 20th century. The students will be creating a landscape with watercolors. Please ask your kiddos about what they learned about their first Art Literacy lesson. If you are interested in helping your class this year, please contact Cory Lines at: gogocory@yahoo.com. We could really use help in Mrs. Chun's class, Mrs. Beyrle's class and Mrs. Putnam/Mrs. Miller's class this year. Happy Fall and thank you for sharing your children with us. We hope to enrich their lives with ART!
Box Tops: Box Tops will be counted on October 16. Please have your student put them in the collection box in their classroom. There is a school-wide challenge in the works, with the grade gathering the most Box Tops over our three collections earning a reward. Box Tops do NOT need to be neatly trimmed, but the product code and expiration date must be visible and valid.
STEM Fair: Planning for this year’s STEM Fair is in the works. In order to create an interactive and engaging event, we are seeking business and industry help. If you know a company that can help with creating or running display/activities or can provide giveaways, please contact the STEM Fair chairs, Jennifer Vondrachek (jennbernards@hotmail.com) and Angie Kawaguchi (angie.kawaguchi@gmail.com).
Fall Festival: Save the Date! Nancy Ryles will be holding their Annual Fall Festival on Friday, October 27 from 5:00-8:00 pm. We will be putting out a call for volunteers soon.
NRCO Meeting: Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our October meeting; it was great seeing everyone. We hope that everyone can continue to join us and hopefully some new families as well. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 7. Hope to see you then!
Conferences: October 18 and 19
No School: October 19 and 20
TALENTED AND GIFTED SERVICES
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office. Completing this form gives our school TAG committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of its completion.
Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
The Parent Information Form must be completed and returned to the school’s office before Monday, October 30, 2017.
