Horizon Husky Newsletter
February 2021
From the Principal's Desk:
With the first month of 2021 school year under the way, I want to thank everyone for your continued support of our students, teachers, and school as we collectively strive to provide optimal opportunities for learning each and every day. We value the important contributions families make towards a student’s success in school. There is no question that the student success at school starts at home. You are your student’s first teacher and are the most significant influence in your student’s schooling.
I am excited that this week starts the first week of Black History Month. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., once said, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” During this month, we plan to celebrate those individuals that paved the foundation for us to build upon. I want to emphasize to our young students that their voices and words have power and when positively put to use, can bring significant change. Our teachers have planned many engaging activities for students to learn about a mixture of historical and current African American figures making a positive impact on society.
Supplies and Materials for Your Students:
Important student supplies and instructional materials are available to be pick-up by families this Wednesday, February 3rd, from 8:00am-6pm. If your family is ever in need of additional supplies, please call our office at 425-366-3000.
When you arrive at Horizon to pick up the materials, please remember to wear a mask, stay in your vehicle, and drive up to the sign. If you are walking, please walk towards the blue gates by the front office. Our staff will be available to help you.
Curbside Library:
Curbside Library Book Pick Up has been expanded to every Thursday and Friday! We have over 7,000 books on our shelves and we want our students to have books to read at home! There are 4 easy steps to getting books from the Horizon library each week:
- Make a plan to come to school on Thursday or Friday between 8:00am-4:00pm.
- Reserve books using the Google Form in the Library Schoology course; OR put books on hold using Destiny Discover ( for students in grades 3, 4, and 5). Reserve books no later than Tuesday!
- Come to school on Thursday or Friday and pick up your books! Ring the doorbell by the office. We wear masks and practice social distancing.
- Bring back all library books when you come to get your new books.
On Supply Distribution day, we will have reserved books ready for students, even if it’s not on a Thursday or Friday.
Technology Support:
Is your child in need of a computer or headphones? Does your family need WiFi access? Are you having trouble logging into Schoology? If you need help with technology, please call our school first. Our Dean of Students, Mr. Lofthus, can answer your questions, or get you the support or resources you need. Mr. Lofthus can be reached directly at (425) 366-3021 or email LofthusCE@mukilteo.wednet.edu.
Horizon Husky Jammin' Jamboree:
Every Wednesdays from 11-11:45am, we will look forward to seeing all Horizon students for our Horizon Husky Jammin’ Jamboree. They will be accompanied by our staff: Mr. Lofthus, Mrs. Boyle, Ms. Janna, Ms. Mia and Ms. Paola. The goal here is to incorporate games, leadership opportunities, a chance to hang out with students from the same grade level, and to celebrate the spirit day themes. Please find the zoom link on your teacher’s Schoology page. We look forward to celebrating our Horizon community this Wednesday.
Meal Service:
-Tuesday Day Pick-Up 11am-2pm
-Thursday Evening Pick-Up 2pm-5pm
Please see the Nutrition Services website on our district site for details and to pre-order meals.
Second Step Lessons:
To help make our school even more safe and supportive, we will be teaching the Second Step Child Protection Unit at Horizon. In these lessons, students learn about personal safety, touching safety, and assertiveness. Please watch your student’s distribution packet for a more detailed letter and for an activation key to access more information at home.
