Classroom News
Hello,
Happy Spring!
We had. a wonderful time a week ago at the ballet watching Snow White. We rode the bus to Capital Theatre for the show. The students loved riding the bus and were taken back by the beauty of the theatre. I think they thought the ballet was pretty awesome too!
We will be going to the aquarium this coming Thursday. We should be back on time, but could be five or ten minutes late. Don't panic. If it seems we have a problem, you will get a text from Ms.Winn.
This is the time of year when we are heavy into blending, reading cvc leveled books and practicing what we have learned. I have been very diligent in helping students understand if they can read a word by itself, they can read it in the story. We have been working hard on trying not to guess as we read and instead, sound out the words. This takes a lot of reminding and practice for students as they are learning how to transfer their knowledge and skill to actual reading. Please remind them at home about this important skill. Also, the more fluently they know their sight words, the easier early reading skills will be for your student. Please practice these as part of your 20 minutes of daily reading.
**Please continue to practice nonsense words, segmenting and letter naming the next couple of weeks before our end of year DIBELS test.
*Crestview will be hosting their annual Feet For Funds evening on Thursday, April 27th. Our class basket for the silent auction will be a "Swim" themed basket. If possible, you can send any swim items to school with your child, or venmo Lesley Scruggs and she will buy what is needed. Any donation would be awesome! These baskets are bid on, the highest bidder wins
and the PTA uses funds made for next school year. This is our only fundraiser and also is tons of fun. Hoper to see you there!
**The week of May 15-19 is our Kindergarten Keep Exit test. You will receive a link to sign up for a 30 minute time slot to have your student tested. Watch for the link to be sent in the next couple of weeks. This means that there is NO KINDERGARTEN that week. You and your child will come only for their scheduled appointment time.
Our last day of Kindergarten will be Thursday, June 1st. This is NOT an early release day. School time will run like normal.
A few items to note:
- Just a reminder, please do not send your child sick to school. They must be fever free for at least 24 hours and have not vomited or had diarrhea for at least 24 hours. Thank you for keeping our classroom healthy!
- Thanks for sending a note if your student is going home with someone that is not already on your list at the office, or that I have not already been made aware of.
- Please read with your student each day for at least 20 minutes. This is one of the best practices you can do to help set up success for reading. Sight word study can also count for part of that time.
- As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions.

Writing-sounding out and writing cvc words
Leveled Readers with sight words and cvc words
Themes - Oceans, Farm Animals, Nursery Rhymes
- Reading at home every night for 20 minutes. For most of Kindergarten this means being read to with an adult or older sibling. Practicing sight words and leveled readers can count as part of your 20 minutes. I will send home a reading chart each month for students to color in a picture for every 20 minutes of reading. They can then return it al the end of the month for a prize.
- PLEASE start to help your student try to sound out simple c/v/c words at home. Trying to write them is also very good practice. Have them say each sound, write the letter, then repeat. ie c/a/t. Say the sound, write /c/ say the sound, write /a/ sound, write /t/
- Also, please have them practice writing common sight words such as /the/and/can/I/a/we/it etc.
- Inventive spelling is now taking place in school and is very developmentally appropriate. Example: if your child is trying to write the word /school/ they may write it as /skol/ Let them practice without fixing it for them.
Math
Granite District has a new math program called iready. We will be using this program along with additional enrichments for our math support.
- Teen Numbers-writing them, decomposing and understanding ways to make each teen number. ie, dice, tally marks, number line, draw objects etc.
- Count to 100 with no skips-please practice counting to 100 with no skips. This is the counting skill for the 4th quarter. *PLEASE practice jumping from 29-30, 39-40 etc. A lot of students struggle with this part of the counting sequence.
Most students in Kindergarten will need a lot of practice with letter and number writing. It is a big part of both reading and math. *Please don't worry if things are backwards etc. This is very developmental and will improve as the year goes along.
