Newsletter Week 2 Term 3

Sacred Heart School Petone Wednesday 4th August, 2021

Kia Orana parents and friends

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing break with your children. This week we are celebrating Cook Islands Language Week and some of our students with Cook Island heritage are leading the learning in all classes.

A huge Thank You to Tane Wilson and his helpers for the fantastic Hangi on the last day of Term 2. Everyone enjoyed the food very much!

Thank you to everyone who completed the Rongohia Te Hau survey. This has now closed.

Congratulations to the Savelio family on the safe arrival of their new daughter and sister.

We offer our sympathy to the McKee, Lysaght and Bain families on their recent family bereavements. We also offer our sympathy to the Sudfeldt family on the recent death of Dave's father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Thanks to Lucy Duncan, Lilian Ngatokorua, Avah Collins and Asantha Wijeyeratne for helping with the refreshments after the Confirmation and Adrian Cartwright for very kindly taking the photos at the Confirmation Mass.

Mufti Mania:

We are having a Mufti Day for the Caritas Mufti Mania Appeal, this Friday. Children may wear Mufti on that day and the cost is a gold coin donation. Thank you for your support of this appeal.

When – Friday August 6th

School - Kristus Raja School (in West Papua)

Need - The students at this small school have felt the impact of the pandemic and been in lockdown since March 2020! The majority of students come from poorer families and have found remote learning a real challenge. The school was built back in 1970 and the buildings are wearing out. Funds raised this year will help repair toilets and bathrooms and provide new desks, chairs and resources for students for when they come back to school.

Chocolate: Thanks to everyone who sold chocolate. We made over $2000.00.

Classes 2022: We have started thinking about our classes for next year and how they will be made up. All our Senior classes will be quite large next year due to the fact that we only have 13 Year 8's leaving. This will have a flow on effect right down the school. If your child will not be returning to Sacred Heart next year we would appreciate knowing this as soon as possible as this will also contribute to how many new enrolments we can take for next year.

Pasifika Parent's Group Meeting Wednesday 11th August 6.30pm. All welcome.

Book Club closes on Tuesday 10th August. No late orders will be accepted.

School Calendar: This has been updated and is available on the school app and the school website.

Our Special Character

Congratulations to the 55 children from our school and church community who were confirmed last Sunday night by Cardinal John. We were very proud of all of you. Cardinal John commented that our students always answer him and speak up very well. Please continue to keep all our candidates and their families in your prayers as they continue their Sacramental Journey. The parent meeting for First Communion will be on Thursday 16th September at 7pm. First Communion will be celebrated at 9.30am Mass on Sunday 3rd October.

We have received our Special Character Review report and it is very pleasing. We have some direction for future development. The report will be available on the school website.

Class liturgies began today with Kotuku hosting the first one. Next Wednesday 11th August, Kereru class will host their Liturgy, followed by Tui & Ruru on the 18th August. You are most welcome to come and join with your children for these Liturgies.

This year the Feast of the Assumption which is the patronal feast of New Zealand and a Holy Day of Obligation falls on a Sunday. We will be celebrating this important Feast Day with an Assumption Liturgy on Friday 13th August at 11.30am in the church. You are all welcome to join us for this Liturgy.

RE in Kereru Class

Called to be like Jesus

The Year 3 and 4 students in Kererū classroom are learning about Jesus’ call to

the Apostles. We are reading Scripture stories of Jesus’ call to his Apostles and

disciples to follow Him. We will be identifying ways members of the Church

are called and respond today.

Jesus was always challenging people to forget their own selfish needs and

consider what others needed first. That’s what makes following Jesus hard.

Most people like to do their own thing first.

Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve,

to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to seek for rest, to labour

and not to seek reward, except that of knowing that I do your will.
