February News

The first month of 2016 is over and we are almost halfway through February. We were very lucky with the weather up until last Friday. I hope this will be our one and only snow day this year.

Miss Costa is back and the children are so excited to have in the classroom every day!

We will be having a small celebration on Friday to celebrate Valentine's Day. If you would like your child to exchange Valentine cards, please send in a card to each student in the class. A list will be sent home on Monday.

On Monday, February, 1st there was a Math Wizard assembly. We had five more students earn Math Wizard awards. Congratulations to Hallie, Priya, Calla, Grace and Jake.

Students should be practicing their math facts each night. The facts can be found in Google Classroom in Homework. The links for each slide presentation was in the January newsletter.

We are very busy learners in Room 129.

During our math block we are learning different addition and subtraction strategies. This week we are working on double facts and related facts. It is important that you child know the double facts . They can practice the double slides or they can listen to the doubles songs and raps in Google Classroom in Math. There are also links below. Your help and support are appreciated.

During reading we read non fiction text and work on fluency. We are working on finding answers within the text to prove answers to questions. I have been sending home passages we have have completed so that students can read them each night for nightly reading to build fluency. Fluency occurs with repeated reads. I also showed most students how they can Screencastify and record themselves reading so they can hear themselves become more and more fluent each day.

We are almost finished with our Martin Luther King writing, The children worked hard on creating a timeline and using the timeline to complete a graphic organizer. They have all completed their rough drafts and many are working on a final copy. Students who have completed their final copy are typing their story in Google Docs.

We will begin working on books for our Storyteller Celebration soon. The children will be writing an autobiography, and we are going to need your help. This week we are sending home a letter with information about this exciting project along with a questionnaire. We could not complete this exciting project without you!

In Fundations we are learning about blends and importance of tapping out each sound that we spell the words correctly.

The chicks are coming soon! On March 1st, we will have our chick presentation from Casey Farm and our chicks will arrive. This is such an amazing experience for the kiddos. We are going to be scientists and engineers during this science unit. We will also be going on a field trip to Casey Farm on May 6th.

In Social Studies we are learning about our town and it's history. You can check out our introduction into our town in your child's Google classroom in Social Studies. Ask them to show you how the computer can read the book to them.
