Mrs. Nagy's 1st Grade Class
First Grade is One in a Minion!
Happy October! Here are a few things to be aware of as we start the new month!
- Spelling Lists - Each Monday the students will receive the current spelling list for their reading group. These words will focus on the vowel sound and consonant sounds we are focusing on this particular week. We will spend some class time reviewing and practicing these words, but I recommend also practicing these at home.
- Snack Chart - The snack chart for the month of October was included in your child's folder on Friday. Please take note of your child's particular snack day for the month. We only have 16 students, so your name may rotate on the calendar twice in a given month. Please no peanuts or peanutbutter products, please!
- Health - This year our students are rotating to Health as a special taught by Mrs. Hogan. She and I will be working together to extend classroom learning to learn more about our Health Curriculum. This month we will be focusing on Fire Safety and Halloween safety. We are so thankful to have this extra learning time:)
- Book order -Coming home in your child's folder this week will be a packet of book order flyers for your enjoyment. This is a great way to keep your child reading....BRAND NEW BOOKS! It also earns us classroom dollars to buy new books for our classroom library. Please see the link below for easy ordering or send your order to school with a check made to Scholastic.
- ARP - We just opened up our classroom to begin the process of trying our AR program this week. I am happy to report that the children are SUPER excited about it! It takes a little bit of patience from the children because I need to help the students one on one at first to help them log in and begin the process. But as we master the process of logging in and how it works, the pace at which students can do this will increase. With that being said...A super special shout out to Lucas Broering who has already hit 25 points!!!! This is an unbelievable feat for a first grader!!! This means that in a weeks time Lucas has read and taken tests on 50 books. Lucas attends our aftercare program which allows him the availability to utilize the school technology to accomplish this. WAY TO GO LUCAS!!!!!
- MAP TESTING We will be MAP testing beginning the week of October 2 for grades K-8. MAP is a computer adaptive test created by NWEA that kids take two to three times per school year. The results provide teachers with information to help them deliver appropriate content for each student and determine each student’s academic growth over time. This testing replaces IOWA testing. These tests will be administered using the ipads.
- PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES for all grades will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017. Sign up information will be available next week. These conferences coincide with the mid-point of our first grading period. We encourage all parents to set up an appointment to meet their child’s teacher.
- Halloween Party - Mark your calendars!!!! SVDP will be having their Halloween Parade and Party on Friday, October 27. A classroom party coordinator will be in touch with parents that have signed up to help with classroom events. STAY TUNED... more information will be given as the event approaches!
Happy Fall!

MATH
For the first part of our school year, the main focus of our GO MATH program is addition and subtraction. We learn about the many ways we can find an answer, including using manipulatives, using a hundreds chart, drawing a picture, mental math, using a number line, making a tens frame, even using our fingers. Not every strategy will work best for your child, but we learn the many different ways so your child can experience and discover the best way for them to be a STEM problem solver.
We will also continue to work on graphing, number sequence, skip counting and shapes (3-D and 2-D) throughout other areas of instruction, TOO:)
Reading
Please read with your child every night for 20 MINUTES:) If your child chooses to read for more than 20, please indicate so in their homework journal and sign. They receive an extra Nagy Nickel for making the effort to be a better reader!
