It’s a wellness Wednesday week!
Shout to First Grade for this picture
Instructional Focus of the Week
Writing
- Shoutout to everyone for how good writing is looking in all grade levels! Great job in 5th grade, what we saw in their writing about immigration, as well as scholars ability to make sure connections to Esperanza rising we extremely strong!
- Evidence of comprehension is displayed in second grade "Nelson Mandela" writing displayed in halls.
- It was also great to see the development of the love of writing in first grade Kemp scholars chose to skip recess because they wanted to finish their writing
- Lastly, in Kinder the road to writing is extremely strongly displayed in their pictures, they literally distinctively tell the story of begining, middle and end, when I asked them questions about"Pete's Chair" it was very clear they knew what they were trying to communicate. Let's KEEP ON WRITING!
Literacy and Math Foci
2-5 Literacy: Scaffolding questions
When scholars don’t get the ESR after the scaffolded question has been delivered, follow up with another scaffold.
Ensure that the question is not leading.
In some cases, input two scaffolded questions in case scholars don’t get the ESR after the first question is used.
In close reading, the Thursday read will focus on aggressive monitoring, looking specifically for a timer to keep you on track and vocally telling the scholars your focus for each round. For example, “I am coming around to look for the correct genre and thinking job. If I circle the genre on your paper it is incorrect. You need to go back and fix it.”
K-5 Math: Leverage Exemplar Responses
Leverage exemplar student responses in order to clear up whole-group misconceptions or to explain the process used to solve the problem being discussed.
Use CFUs (check for understanding) after an exemplar response is given to ensure the whole group is moving on in the lesson with clarity. If you are having to restate or re-explain often, you are doing the heavy lifting.
Checking in with scholars who you have identified beforehand is good practice so that they have thought about the response, state the key points in their explanation, and explain in a quick, efficient way that does not deter the pace of your lesson. This will also help ensure you stick to the time stamps you have planned for with your timers holding you accountable.
