Math
This week in math we began our next unit which focuses on numbers 10-20. We started this unit by looking closely at the number 10. The students identified groups of 10 ones before counting any additional ones in a given group of objects. This will help them to begin to see how we use place value with numbers greater than 10. They did a great job for our first few days of this unit.
Reading and Phonics
This week in reading we continued to focus on our independent reading skills at our personal levels. The students also had the opportunity to share their reading with their 6th grade buddy.
In phonics this week we wrapped up our practice with letter blends by differentiating between some tricky ones (such as "dr" and "tr"). We also took a look at vowel sounds, noticing the difference between the long and short sounds of each vowel.
Earth Day
This week we celebrated Earth Day! We started the week off by helping our own school environment cleaning up our playground. The students were amazed by the amount of garbage we found just on our own grounds. It was easy for them to see how much more garbage their must be throughout our planet!
We then took some time to make Earth Day promises. The students brainstormed many ways they can help the planet by saving electricity or water, not wasting paper or other recyclables, and cleaning up litter we find outside. We made a fun craft to help us remember our promise to the Earth.
Our new break path in the hallway!
