NCSS/NCGE/TCSS 2019 Volunteer Sign UP
As the Co-Located Conference of NCSS/TCSS/NCGE will be held in Austin, TX. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate the many different aspects of the conference. We are asking for your help and support in volunteering your time to help host a successful joint conference.
Why to consider volunteering bonus: NCSS offers a 1-to-1 match for all volunteer time. For example, volunteer for the full day on Thursday and you can attend the conference free for the full day on Friday. Volunteer for a half day on Saturday and attend the conference for the other half of Saturday. In addition, NCSS offers special discounted registration rates for conference volunteers to attend for days beyond the 1-to-1 match. The one-day volunteer rate is $129 and the two-day rate is $159.

It's A Puzzle And A Mystery!
The job of the Treasurer and the Finance committee is not just about counting the nickels, balancing the checkbook, and paying TCSS bills. The job is to oversee the fiscal well being of The Organization by fitting the puzzle pieces together in order that social studies throughout the state will continue to be supported by TCSS efforts.
The budgets that are submitted by each committee become the planning guide. The Finance Committee reviews the budget for its reflection of the TCSS Constitution and Policy Statements. It is not the job of the Treasurer and the Finance Committee to decide how funds are spent but to aid TCSS with the most accurate information available to make the best fiscal decisions possible.
We also calculate the long-term costs of every decision made by the Executive Committee, Executive Board, and the Membership. We research the impact of hundreds of factors on the continued fiscal health of the Organization. We move the puzzle pieces around until they all fit together for the best outcome for TCSS.
The mystery in all this is how to make it work when each member’s dues are only $30.00 annually; funds are spent on an annual conference; TCSS offers grants, scholarships, and awards to students and educators; and TCSS does not sell anything for profit. To be successful the Finance Committee needs a few TCSS members to come and learn how the pieces can fit together.
You do not need a degree in accounting (we use QuickBooks). You do not need experience in budgeting (you are living on teaching salaries, so you already know how that works). You do not need to know the latest interest rate set by the Federal Reserve (that is what Google does). You do not need to live in a specific location (the internet and cell service connect us all easily). You will not be counting nickels in a backroom after a conference (most of our transactions are electronic).
You do need to join the Finance Committee to better understand how Texas Council for the Social Studies continues to support its mission and its teachers. Your willingness to serve and learn will be a great way to get to know few hard-working people just a bit better.
If you have any questions, please contact Jenae Hill, TXCSS Treasurer.
