Home Reinforcement Activities
Mrs. Hynek's 2nd Grade Class
High Frequency Spelling Word Reinforcement
At the beginning of each month your child will bring home a high frequency word list. This list includes 30 high frequency words per month that 2nd grade students will be expected to spell correctly by the end of the month. Your child will have many opportunities to practice spelling these words at school, but many would benefit from additional practice with these words at home as well. At the end of the month, we will have a spelling assessment in class with these words.
Reading Reinforcement
At the beginning of each month, students will bring home a Reading Log where they can record their reading minutes. This is not required, but strongly recommended. At the end of each month, all reading logs can be returned back to school and will be put in the celebration section of their Leadership Notebooks.
Math Fixer Practice
Each month, we will learn new “fact fixers” during math time. We use fixers to help increase math fact automaticity. We will be learning how to make these fixers at school this week. (Please refer to the video below to see how your child can make and use fixer flashcards at also at home as an option for fact practice.) The fact fixers will be sent home at the beginning of each month and are located on the back of the high frequency word list.
Additional Math Fact Practice
This week your child will be taking an addition and subtraction math fact timed tests. By the end of 2nd grade, our goal is for the students to get 35 math facts completed correctly in two minutes. We will be using class time to practice our facts at school several times a week. (If your child reaches the goal of 35 on both the add./sub. tests, I will move them up to practicing their mult./div. facts).
As there is no formal homework component with our new Math in Focus curriculum, it is also suggested to have your child practice their math facts at home. This is entirely optional, but highly recommended for math fact automaticity! Students can keep track of their math fact practice on the math log that is copied on the back of the reading log. At the end of each month, students can bring back their logs to school to be housed in their Leadership Notebooks.
Once a week, we will take either an addition or a subtraction math fact timed test so that the students can track their progress throughout the year. Once your child meets the addition goal, they will move on to subtraction and then multiplication/division (which we will be studying later this year). These quizzes will be sent home for you to check in on the progress they are making. It is always exciting for the students to see how much “fact power” they acquire over the course of the school year. Having this fact power will help the students tackle more difficult computation!
There are different ways for your child to practice his or her math facts and below are
a few suggestions (Feel free to use any other types of practice that work for you and your
child):
- Xtramath.org - This is the program that I believe helps students the most! (Login information will be sent home this week at Curriculum Night).
- Freckle - This online program has a separate math facts section. (Login information will be sent home this week at Curriculum Night).
- Flashcards – Use store-bought ones or have your child make their own notecards.
