Reading
We have wrapped up our Superkids' Club book on letters K, Q, and J. It will be coming home tomorrow, Thursday, in the Friday Folder. We had a lot of fun with Ettabetta's word games while she was Supernoodle. We played a memory game by looking at a tray of objects and then on the next page we needed to read a list of words and circle the items that were on the tray (without looking back at the previous page). We also reviewed short vowel sounds by listening to the clue and finding the puzzle piece that create the correct word. This is helping us to identify the medial sounds. In order to continue developing your child's phonemic awareness skills you can say a word and ask them what sound is at the beginning, middle, and end of the word. You can also ask them to tell you where the sound is in a word. For example, you could say jump, where is the /p/ sound. If your child is able to do this successfully, you can say a word and then tell them to change part of the word. For example, say run, then say change the /r/ to a /f/. Then, say hot, then say change the /t/ to a /p/.
We also learned about dialogue sentences. Our newest memory word is said. We also learned about quotation marks. So far in the year, our stories have contained dialogue through speech balloons next to the character that is speaking. Now, we can read dialogue in a story and understand that said means that the character is saying the words within the quotation marks. We also learned that a comma means we should pause and take a breath when we see it in a sentence.
We spent the last couple of days focusing on rhyming words. We were excited to read Ettabetta's version of the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill! It was different than the original Jack and Jill that we knew, but it had the same idea and it rhymed!
