3rd Grade Newsletter
April 29, 2019
What are we learning about this week?
It's hard to believe it's already the end of April!
Language Arts:
Students will continue to work on their biographies. They will begin the process from research, to note taking, to rough draft and then to final draft.
Here is a refresher:
Your third grader will soon begin writing a biography in language arts. We've encouraged students to get a head start and check books out from our school library on a person they are interested in learning more about. Their goal is to find a book that they can read independently and within 2 weeks when we start the writing process. One of their sources must be a book (preferably one with a timeline of the person's life), not just information found online.
Please encourage your child to read their books from home. We'll also leave time in the day for silent reading.
Thank you so much for your support from home!
Math: This unit provides a review of material covered earlier in the year, as well as opportunities to extend skills and concepts into work with larger numbers and bigger ideas. Early in the unit, students learn to multiply single digits by multiples of 10. That skill is then extended into building and sketching 1-digit by 2-digit multiplication combinations. Working with multiplication beyond the basic facts provides rich opportunities to review the commutative and distributive properties and tap into the power of the associative property of multiplication. Having worked previously with fractions as parts of a whole and distances along a number line, students are introduced to linear and area models that allow them to see fractions as parts of a set as well as a parts of a whole. These models include a ruler, an egg carton, a 12-foot strip of adding machine tape, and a circle graph. The unit ends with a foray into data collection, representation, and interpretation of data.
We are finishing up our last unit before the STAAR test. Students will be bringing home a Unit 7 Pre-test that we will complete in class. Please look it over with you child.
Social Studies: We are learning the difference between a 2-D map and a 3-D map as well as parts of a map(ie. scale, grid, map key, and compass rose).
Science:
Earth Interactions Students will explore, investigate, and compare landforms found on Earth and the rapid changes landforms undergo. They will explore changes and interactions between humans and their environment including how people adapt, modify and use the physical environment. Students will explore and investigate natural resources and the impact of rapid changes to natural resources.
Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw
This month your child is learning how to use Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw- Balance feels best.
This habit focuses on students learning to take care of their body by eating right, exercising, getting sleep, spending time with family and friends.
How to Sharpen the Saw at Home:
I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, playing outside, and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends and enjoy their company. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I am always seeking to learn new information. I take time to find meaningful ways to help others.
1) Have a family game night.
2) Exercise together. Keep a health journal-Everyone sets a goal for the week.
3) Read together!
4) Make your own family club.
5) Serve others in the community
We encourage you to partner with us in teaching your student to practice The Seven Habits at home. To learn more about The Seven Habits and how they can be used at home, visit "Parent's Place" at http://www.theleaderinme.org/parents/
