Instruction & Technology Updates
"Learning is not doing; it is reflecting on doing."
A cornerstone of quality instruction and improved student retention is reflection. Through frequent assessment and feedback, a culture that promotes self- reflection and encourages students to think about what they are learning as they are learning begins to manifest itself. Forms of reflection can often vary but we now have multiple tools at our disposal to maximize student reflection and amplify student voice. Of course we always have the option for traditional student journaling but we now also have the following choices:
- Blogging via Blogger (Google tool): Essentially online journaling, although frequently done in a more casual writing style. Allows for students to embed images, links and/or videos to add to the textual narrative.
- Schoology Discussion Board: Not only does this tool allow students who may not feel comfortable talking out-loud in class to share their thoughts and add to the class conversation but it also allows for a more collaborative, community based reflective environment.
- Recap or FlipGrid: These terrific tools offer students an easy platform for being reflective via video reflections. Recap is question-led chat tool augmented by the power of video that makes it easier to start deeper, more empowering discussions with students and teachers. It allows students to easily use their cell phones to record video reflections to share with either just the teacher or the rest of the class. It is also free!
With tools such as the ones listed above, student reflection has never been easier. We encourage each teacher to spend some time asking how student reflection on learning happens in his/her own classroom and consider where opportunities lay in the future for reflective opportunities. If you have any questions concerning any of the tools listed above, please do not hesitate to contact me!
IMPORTANT HAPARA/CHROMEBOOK UPDATE
Teacher Dashboard allows teachers to see what is on a student's Chrome browser screen. It DOES NOT allow you to see their desktop, simply the browser. For this reason, it is important to note that if a student is utilizing a tool such as Sticky Notes, you will not be able to see what they have via Teacher Dashboard. For this reason, please remember best practices regarding Chromebook management and be aware that this possibility currently exists for students. If you have any questions about how best to address any concerns you may have about this, please contact me.
