From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
As we gear up for this long holiday weekend, I’d like to take a moment to list some very special people who deserve my thanks:
Our students– You bring joy into each day here at Winfield. YOU are the reason we are an amazing place to learn and grow.
Our parents– Without you, our efforts alone would not be enough. You are truly partners in our mission to provide continuous academic improvement in a safe environment.
Our teachers– Your dedication to the students of Winfield is a testament to what makes a great teacher. You bring the art and science of teaching to life.
Our secretaries– The knowledge you bring about school operations, and the patience you show with all of our families is unmatched.
Our nurse– My thanks for you are unending. You take care of all the bumps, bruises, and the icky stuff, too. You help keep our students healthy and safe.
Our custodial staff– Your shared commitment to keeping a neat, clean, and organized environment helps teachers focus on what they do best– teaching.
Our kitchen staff– Every day you try to fill the bellies of our students with “good for you” food choices, so they can fill their minds with learning.
Our educational support staff– We are closing achievement gaps because of you. Never forget how important you are to the life of one child.
Our PTO– Overachievers are my kind of people! Your group is always going above and beyond expectations to support our students and teachers. You are vital to our success.
Our community– The time, talent, and treasure you share with Winfield Elementary clearly demonstrates we are “all in this together.”
This Thanksgiving I am thankful for my family, friends, and health. In addition, I am especially thankful that I am privileged to serve the students and families of Winfield Elementary.
From the Home-School Facilitator, Mrs. Mucha
I hope last week information was useful to understand some of the changes your 6 year old is going through. Here is some information regarding 7 year olds:
Seven years old:
- Might tend towards complaining, usually about their parents or the rules, but also about friends and other kids.
- Will feel misunderstood by many.
- Can be dramatic about school, friends or life in general.
- Will try to use words to talk about how they are feeling but may become frustrated and angry when they are upset.
- Will be becoming more aware of what other people think.
The support they need:
- Listen and validate what they are feeling and know that you don’t need to fix their problems.
- Discuss how they might solve the things that are causing them trouble. Give them space and encouragement to come up with their own ideas.
- Don’t be drawn into the dramatics.
- Don’t immediately think that things are a mess because they are saying they are.
- Jump on the positive.

Permission slips are required and will be coming home with all 1st grade students this week. Please contact me with any questions related to these screenings.
