The best class you can take is a Bachelor of Science in Fire Science. That's when you learn about fire protection, fire safety, and a lot more.

What is a good college to go to for this career?

There is many colleges in the United States that offer different types of programming to become a firefighter. Such as the University of Phoenix, Kaplan University, & Colorado Mountain College.

What is there work schedule?

Firefighters work on holidays and weekends. They mainly do 24 hour shifts, the get 2 days off. Or 10-12 hour shifts for three to four days in a row. This is why the firehouse is made to be like a second home for the firefighters!

How much does an average fireman make a year/hourly?

The beginning firefighter often makes $25,000-$28,000 yearly. The average firefighter makes around $47,00-$49,000 yearly. A fireman who has had his job for a long time and have a higher salary can make up to $70,000. Hourly a fire man can make anywhere from $22-$40. It all depends on what part of the country you are in and how long you have had your job.

What are some skills you would want to have for this career?

Many would think right away that you would need to have to be able to run fast and be able to have easy mobility but, there's a lot more to it. You don't need to be a fast mover, you can still go at a good pace as long as you are getting the job done. Also, you have to be able to carry a lot of equipment. Also you need to be able to pick up a person if the time would come where they can't get out of a fire by themselves. You would need to have good self discipline meaning you are doing the right thing at the right time and not wandering doing the opposite of putting out a fire or rescuing lives. Being brave is probably the top priority when it comes to going into a burning building.. Having good teamwork skills also is very needed for this career.

What kind of degree would you need?

The best degree you could get is a Fire Science Degree. Did you know many fireman take their courses online?

How much gear do they have? What are some of the gear?

They carry pounds and pounds of gear. These are just some of the gear they wear or carry.

What is some training you take to become one?

There is a lot of training for firefighters. The most important training is called the Breathing Apparatus. This is a breathing test to make sure your lungs can handle harsh environments. Like going into a burning building with all the smoke, is not going to make it easy to breathe. So as a firefighter, you have to work on your breathing with your lungs, even with a mask on. Also you have to work on carrying all your gear. Holding a water hose isn't exactly easy, it takes lots of strength. Being a firefighter takes a lot of time and hard training.

What exactly does a firefighter do?

They save lives! Typically they drive fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. Firefighters go into burning buildings and save victims. Also, they put out fires with the hoses on their fire trucks. All of these help the community, and keep people safe.
