A Note from your Principal
Dear West Newton families,
Thank you to all of our families that participated in our Grades 1-3 Dance with Someone You Love. The outfits were spectacular, the company was wonderful, and the dancing was energetic! Thank you also to our West Newton PBIS Committee for dreaming up this fun event and making it memorable for everyone.
February is Communication Month which means your child’s teacher will be reaching out to you with information regarding your child’s current grades and growth on benchmark assessments. The Data Talks that the Instructional Leadership Team had with each student in January showed students just how much they have grown as learners from Fall 2019 to Winter 2020.
I hope to see many of our West Newton families at West Newton’s Got Talent on Fri., Feb. 21 from 6-8pm. Cost is $2 per person or $5 per family – cash only, please - with all proceeds going to our PTO to purchase items for our students and classrooms. This is another amazing evening that celebrates our students and showcases their talents! Thank you for sharing your child with us at West Newton.
With Tiger Pride,
Principal Strube

A NOTE FROM THE NURSE
Cold and Flu Reminders!
Dear Parents and guardians,
Cold and flu season is upon us! My main goal this season is to keep our West Newton students and staff as healthy as possible. I will need everyone’s help in order to accomplish this goal! The following are some reminders about illness and your children:
1) Students that have a fever above or equal to 100.0 degrees MUST STAY HOME!
2) Students cannot return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of medication. The Center for Disease Control recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care.
3) Students will be sent home if they have a fever above or equal to 100.0, or vomiting 2x or more and/or experiencing frequent diarrhea. If a student has a low grade temperature in the morning or has vomited/diarrhea they are most likely contagious. PLEASE KEEP THEM HOME!
4) Seek emergency medical attention if your child shows any of these symptoms:
-Fast or trouble breathing
-Bluish skin color
-Not drinking any fluids
-Not waking up or not interacting
-Flu-like symptoms resolve but then return with high fever and/or worsening cough
-Fever with a rash
5) Washing your hands is the BEST way to prevent the spread of cold and flu!!
6) Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze (try coughing into your sleeve instead of your hands if tissues are unavailable-ALWAYS wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer!
7) Please notify the school if your student has been diagnosed with influenza A and please make sure to share any doctor’s notes or medical documentation related to the illness with the school nurse.
Thank you for your help in keeping our Tiger cubs healthy and ready to learn!!

GYM NEWS
From the gym…
January was a busy time in the gym. We started a basketball unit with skill work – dribbling, passing and shooting – and then progressed to basketball games – boys vs. boys and girls vs. girls (after I explained that we’re not trying out for the NBA, but playing to have FUN!) ;) This year, we’re having two weeks of games rather than one so we’ll be finishing basketball in February. Then we’ll begin working on soccer skills, and the 4th thru 6th grade classes will do their second round of basic physical skill assessments (running, sit ups, and pushups). The assessments are done in August, February and May so the students can track their personal progress for the year. Most of the students enjoy testing themselves against the stopwatch so they don’t really view this day as testing, but an individual competition.
It’s hard to believe that the school year is half over already! Your children have made me smile, laugh, sometimes cry (happy tears!) and challenged me to be a better person and teacher. I’m looking forward to all of the blessings each of them bring me for the remainder of this year! Thank you SO much for sharing your wonderful children with me!!!

Decatur Township Library Cards
Decatur Township has entered into a partnership with the Indianapolis Public Library. Through this partnership, every year we provide the library with a list of our students, and they match the list with their database of patrons. If a student does not currently have a library card, they will be issued one. This program has been very successful in our schools and in other districts in Indianapolis.
The special card students receive will give them access to all of the library’s digital materials, such as databases of magazine and journal articles, downloadable ebooks, emagazines and audio books. In addition, it will give them very limited access to physical items, such as regular books. Of course, you can change this to a full access card by visiting your library. This is an outstanding opportunity for your student. If for any reason you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact our school office for paperwork to opt out.
Any questions or concerns about the program can be directed to Lynn Hodgkin, Elementary Media Coordinator, at 317-856-2221.
