Mrs. Bates is an old, poor, hard hearing woman. She is Miss Bates' mother and is very quiet. She was considered with, "all the regard and respect which a harmless old lady...can excite" (Austen 18). Miss Bates let her youth fly by her just so she could take care of her widow mother. Mrs. Bates can ," pass everything but tea and quadrille" (18). She is a small, old, harmless character.
