The Hilltop Times January 2023

"We Believe...Success for ALL!"

From Principal Adams

Happy New Year, Eagle Family! I hope the holiday season and start of 2023 has been amazing. We look forward to great things happening during the second semester! Students will continue to engage in learning during field studies throughout the Midlands, enjoy guest readers during the 100 Men and 100 Women Read events, and showcase all they've learned on district and state assessments. We will also relaunch our yearbook sale later this spring! All of this comes after a successful first semester. Students transitioned very well to their new grade levels, we remodeled our primary playground, resumed in-person activities for visitors, relaunched our Eagle Choir, partnered with schools in the Lower Richland Cluster for our first Fall Festival, implemented our annual science fair, and celebrated literacy during our Fall Book Fair and Family Literacy Night. The Penguin Patch holiday store sponsored by PTO was also a huge success.

As always, we cannot do what we do without the support of parents and community. We encourage you to stay connected by visiting our school website and interacting with our school page on Class Dojo, Facebook, and Twitter. Reviewing your child's grades on Parent Portal continues to be an expectation so you can monitor their growth and consult with your child's teacher to address any declines before the end of the grading period. Volunteering in your child's classroom or around the school is always encouraged, especially males who would like to participate in R1 CHAMPS, the district's new initiative to incorporate positive male role models on campus. Volunteers must undergo a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) background check and a Department of Social Services (DSS) Child Abuse Registry check. Men who are interested in volunteering for the R1 CHAMPS initiative can click here to sign up. For more information, contact Kerry Abel at 803-231-7182, 803-553-0072 or kerry.abel@richlandone.org

Open communication continues to be one of my core values. If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions please contact me at the school at 803-783-5545.

Midyear STAR Testing

All students will participate in STAR testing, a districtwide benchmark assessment for reading and math. Testing will begin promptly at 8:00am. Daily, on-time arrival will be important on these dates to minimize disruptions in the classroom. Please encourage your child to do their personal best. Although one cannot study for these tests, you can help reinforce skills with your child by having them meet their weekly goal on Lexia, Dreambox, and Pathblazers. Consult your child's teacher if you need login information to these online resources.

2022-2023 Parent and Student Handbook

See below for the English and Spanish versions of the 2022-2023 Parent and Student Handbooks which provide general information about our school, behavior expectations, ways to communicate, and instruction-related topics. Please contact the school if you need a hard copy sent home with your child.

Daily, on-time attendance is important for our Eagles. They miss valuable, direct instruction from their teacher(s) that is not comparable to a packet of work. Attending school regularly and on time helps your child feel better about school. Here are a few ways you can help:

  1. Maintain a regular bed time and morning routine.
  2. If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and talk to teachers or school counselor for ways to support them.
  3. Contact the school counselor if you are experiencing tough times such as unstable housing, transportation, or health problems so we can offer support.
  4. When possible, avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
