Sharing Second Grade
A Peek at Our Week!
September 24 - 28, 2018
MATH:
2.1 - In our second math unit students will learn to represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction with, and without, regrouping. They will also learn mental strategies they can use to help them add and subtract fluently within 20.
2.2 - Students have had a great time learning about plane figures this week! We went on a Playground Field trip and found trapezoids, pentagons, circles, quadrilaterals, and even some 3-D shapes! We also worked with Ozobots today and created shape mazes for our little robots to follow! Next week, we will continue our study of geometry and will be learning how to partition circles and rectangles.
3.1 - This week we will start our second math unit. Students will begin learning the concept of multiplication by creating groups and arrays to model and explain products. Click here to preview the standards we will cover and explore sample problems. Students can use IXL 3rd grade skills E.1 - E.7 to practice these skills. The unit 1 post assessment will be sent home Monday afternoon. Please review the test with your child and help him/her correct errors, as needed. Thanks for signing and returning the test on Tuesday!
READING:
We are wrapping up our reading unit! The students have learned to read with fluency, stamina, and comprehension. Students now know a variety of strategies to tackle difficult words. They have also learned to recognize some special techniques that their favorite authors use and are now applying them in their own writing. This week we will complete our post assessment for the narrative reading unit and pre-test for the upcoming non-fiction reading unit.
WRITING:
In our first writing unit the students have improved their narrative writing skills. They have learned to stretch out and magnify their small moment stories by adding details and strong beginnings and endings. They discovered craft moves that authors use to create powerful stories and can now add these techniques as they write. This week we will complete our post assessment for the narrative writing unit and pre-test for the upcoming non-fiction writing unit.
WORD WORK:
During the next two weeks our phonetic focus is on words with r-controlled vowels. This week we will build, read, and spell words with the -ar and -or pattern.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are continuing a unit on geography. Students will use different sources to identify major topographical regions of Georgia.
