Mrs. Baker's Class Newsletter

September 16-20th

What is going on?

Math: This week we the students will use place value to compare and order whole numbers. They will also be finding patterns of ten, and creating picture and bar graphs. Students will be problem solving daily to apply the skills taught during the week.

Social Studies: This week we will be working on social studies for celebrate freedom week. Students will understand the functions of government, and how we celebrate freedom in America. Constitution day is officially Tuesday, Sept. 17. On Friday, Sept. 20 we will have a Freedom Walk after assembly where we will be assignment a specific color to wear (red, white or blue) - more information will be coming in the following days.

Reading: The focus in reading will be connections in the beginning of the week then we will move into setting and character analysis later in the week. Students will make connections to their own experiences, to ideas in texts, and to the larger community and discuss textual evidence. Students will ask relevant questions, seek clarification, and locate facts and details about stories. I would like them to compare texts and support answers with evidence from the text. Students will describe similarities and differences in the setting of several works by the same author. **I will be assessing students individual reading levels this week. I will be sharing this information with you during conferences.

Writing: We have started our Writing Workshop, but I want to focus on complete sentences this week. Please remind them at home as well. We are sketching out stories and sharing out snapshots of our life.
