Speech and Debate
Hood River tied for 3rd Place in Speech Sweepstakes at our South Oregon National Qualifier tournament. Hood River's best result yet! We took 15 students to compete and all but 2 made it to Day 2 of competition (quite a difference from 4 years ago when we took 6 students and none made it to Day 2)
Special congratulations to Emily Mitchell and Audrey Schlemmer for their 4th Place finish in Duo Interpretation, Emily Mitchell for her 4th Place in Dramatic Interpretation, and Sarah Wang for 5th Place in International Extemporaneous.
Soren Rajani won 2nd place in Lincoln-Douglas debate
Ruby Patterson won 1st Place in Informative Speaking
Ruby and Soren will represent our team at the National Tournament June 17-23 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Let the fundraising begin!
More Speech and Debate
HRV won the District Championship Sweepstakes and qualified 19 students to State in 25 events/spots.
It was a great tournament-- our students, parents, community judges, alumni from several different decades, teachers, district staff, and local restaurants all chipped in to make it a success, fun, and a wonderful learning experience for the whole district.
Thank you for helping celebrate the hard work and success of our students.
AVID
I just wanted to share some good news and positive events from our program this month.
- Freshman visited MHCC and Concordia University
- Sophomores visited MHCC and Univ. of Portland
- Juniors are slated to visit OSU next month
- Lisa and I took a bus of interested students to UO
- The entire program got to attend a college fair, speaker panel, and BLAZER game
- All AVID students forecasted for classes on our rigorous course load checklist
- 22 students ended up on Honor Roll
- 6 students earned a 4.0
- 87% of our students had a stronger semester GPA than their cumulative GPA
- We had a successful WYMS 8th grade AVID visitation day
- End of Semester Bowling Celebration
- I-Pad rollout
These are happening because of what you all bring to the program. Whether it’s chaperoning, supporting, having a personal conversation, or helping the logistical support needed. Thank you for all of the continued dedication to our AVID students, and the HRC community.
Theatre news
So you might be aware there is another story on the Tony award on Oregonlive (The Oregonian will have a story as well this weekend I think).
HOWEVER - if you scroll down past my story you will see a story about Fun Home's production of The Oregon Trail with a former HRV actor Liz Ghiz. If you remember, she was in Les Mis (the first production) and my The Tempest (she was amazing).
On another note, Onar Smith and Aidan Tappert are in two Portland productions opening soon.
Onar is in an improv show produced by Oregon Children's Theatre and Aidan has a lead in the musical John Hughes High produced by Staged (a member or Artists Rep).
Paul Hargrave got on as a tech for John Hughes High as well. Way to network, Paul.
Vicente Caldaron is working as a sound technician for Broadway Rose Theatre.
