Mobile Apps for the Classroom
Poems by the Heart
Poems by the Heart provides classic poetry and challenges one to memorize perennial favorites by an interactive word/phrases game. According to App Store2014, "Memorizing and reciting poems help you to enjoy them at a deeper level, learn them for life, impress your friends and improve your mind". The user will view the original poem memorize and proceed on to then play a game by filling in the missing words to the poem.
I would use this app in the classroom for English class. In English whether it be in elementary, junior high or high school there is always a poetry unit. The students after learning the poems discussed in class will be able to use this app to read, memorize and prepare for exams in an interactive manner. The one aspect that I appreciate about this app is that it is not just a read the poem and forget what you read, but it gives you questions, and games to help you remember what you are reading and at the same time makes it a fun way of learning.
Oh No Fractions!
I would use this app in the math classroom, specifically for the unit of Fractions. I think the best way to incorporate this app in the classroom is to first teach the basic concepts about fractions and then provide this tool to the students. This acts as a great way of practicing their understanding of what is being taught as well as it brings in the hands on learning experience of physically dragging, swiping the device to create equal, less than , or greater than fractions.
Ruler- A curious Tool
This is such a great app to use in the math classroom, specifically for the measurement unit. The students get the hands on experience of taking the images and seeing the comparison of measurements between two objects. This provides the students with the awareness of how long or how high or how short different objects are in their daily life.
Penguin Leveled Readers
This would be great for the classroom, as well as at for home. In the classroom the whole class can read a story together with everyone being able to take turns. At home, instead of lugging around another bag with 2 or 3 books in it for home reading, the students have their home reading on this app. The teacher just needs to notify the parents of the level their child is in.
This is beneficial in the elementary grades for teachers that use spelling words weekly. The students will be able to easily study the words on a nightly basis and be well prepared for the test at the end of the week. As well, the students can not bring up the excuse that they couldn't find their sheet with the spelling words written on it or they left the sheet at school all week so they couldn't study. The app allows the students to easily access, view and study it from home.
