Important Daily Arrival Reminder
Morning Meeting is immediately following breakfast, at 7:45.
It is essential that our students arrive BEFORE 7:45 so they can eat and participate in Morning Meeting, so they can connect with their class for a successful day.
Thank you for making sure your child arrives to school ON TIME so they are READY FOR SUCCESS!

Thank you for supporting our PTO, our teacher and students!
Note from Nurse Judy
Be on the lookout for information and registration forms. Forms are due November 18th to be sure your child can participate and receive treatment!
Attendance Matters!
Attendance is incredibly important. We want to make sure students are at school and on time so they are learning. We are working hard this year to focus on attendance and have some different incentives going on for classrooms. Each month we will have one classroom that is the winner of our attendance bracket. This class will receive a treat from us!
We appreciate you letting us know when your child is going to be out. Mrs. Kaylie and Ms. Jamie, in the office, will take your call and record this information. If your child is absent and we haven't heard from you, Ms. Jamie will be giving you a call to check in.
You may also receive a call from Dr. Day, our assistant principal, at some point to touch base with you on your child's attendance.
Thank you for helping your child learn by being at school and on time!
CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Johnson's class for earning a pizza celebration with Dr. Day!
Honoring Our Veteran's
Our 4th and 5th graders will receive specific information from Mr. Musselman about when to arrive to be ready for the performance.
If you are unable to attend the evening performance, come enjoy the concert at 9:00 am.
Art News from Mrs. Boyd
Supplies Needed:
· Please continue to send in lightweight cardboard and toilet paper/paper towel tubes. I will be donating extra tubes to our upcoming STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Art and Math) Night.
· Newspaper
· 2 liter soda bottles
· Plastic Containers with lids (gallon ice cream, cottage cheese, sour cream, etc.)
· Baby Wipes-Thank you to those who have already given wipes this year. You are a blessing. Please send in a package if you have not given one.
· Artistic Odds-and-Ends: A huge thank you for the gifts of Artistic Odds-and-ends! I love helping your declutter.
Artsonia
Most finished projects are on Artsonia. I will send out information for Artsonia’s Holiday Sale within the next couple of weeks. Please never feel obliged to buy things from them, but if you are interested, each family gets 20% off one item.
Holiday Ornament Sale
I will be sending home information about handmade holiday ornaments. I make and sell two types of personalized ornaments to raise money for the Art Fund. These include (1) handprints on a glass or shatterproof sphere and (2) silhouettes on ceramic ornaments. The orders will be due earlier this year as I will be out for surgery the last week of December.
Art Club
I have put off beginning art club due to my scheduled surgery and anticipated recovery time. It will now begin in Late January or early February. Students must create an art project, at home on their own time, for submission to attend art club. This can include any media of choice. I select students for art club based on the following: first-come, first-serve basis; time spent on art submission; and a review of their art classroom and school-wide behavior. Art club members must be respectful, responsible, and safe in school and in the art classroom. In addition, they must be keeping up with their schoolwork from other subjects.
Grade Level Happenings
5th grade:
· We began to work on Kachinas, making part of the base sculpture. Students will choose their Kachina and personalize the sculptures next.
· Students are also working on a Holiday project, called Ornaments on Branches. Orchestra students are exempt from finishing these if they cannot complete them in class. I plan to display these at school in December.
4th Grade:
· We are using our ABC’s of art to learn the elements and principles of art. We have reviewed lines and shapes.
· We have almost finished Sunflower sketches and will be transferring the sketches to good black paper beginning next week.
3rd Grade is finishing their worksheet color wheels. Students who finish early are enjoying some choice based art options, including doing a first grade project that they didn’t get to do two years ago. I am excited to see how these fun projects will turn out done with their more advanced skills.
2nd Grade is creating Landscapes with the secondary colors: Purple, Green and Orange. I am so proud how they have focused on craftsmanship when painting and cutting.
Kindergarten and 1st Grades are studying texture with texture rubbings and printmaking.
· Kindergarten made one texture rubbing in warm colors as practice for rubbing texture with crayon. They will print apples and hopefully have time to print leaves as well.
· First grade created two rubbings of leaves in warm and cool colors. They will print leaves on one of their texture rubbing backgrounds and paint a tree on the other.
Focus on Parenting - Don't Be Scared of Whining This Holiday Season
"Why can't I trick-or-treat without you?" "Why can't I have my candy now?" Many parents will be hearing these questions from their little ghouls and goblins during the Halloween season. And many parents will hear it over and over as kids repeat "but why?" in a whining tone. Kids use this whining technique hoping their parents will give them what they want. When kids whine, we can ask or tell ourselves:
1. Is this genuine curiosity or whining? If your child really wants to learn about something, answering the "but why?" question can start a fun conversation. But if the child is whining and complaining, parents don't need to provide a lengthy explanation for setting a limit or imposing a consequence.
2. Make your child think. Many times, parents try to reason and offer an explanation when they set limits for kids, such as, "I have to go trick-or-treating with you because I don't want you to get hurt." We suggest parents respond to "but why?" by saying in a non-sarcastic way, "Why do you think?"
But no matter how many explanations parents give, many kids continue to ask "but why?" Instead, it is the child who should be doing the thinking. A child's brain development is enhanced if he or she has to spend time thinking about the answer, rather than immediately receiving it from the parent.
3. Offer empathy. Provide a healthy dose of sadness and understanding rather than anger and frustration. For example, "Feel free to have a piece of your Halloween candy after you've eaten your dinner."
Whether it is Halloween or any other day, things go best when we set good limits in loving ways and stick to the limits that we set.
Be safe and have fun!
