News & Info @ Alta Vista
Forest Closed
With the ongoing problems happening in the intermediate forest, we are going to have to close it for the next two weeks. When students are on the field they may only be on the grass area. They may not be in the dirt, the sand, or in the dugouts. We'll include this in the morning announcements and inform the lunch yard duty supervisors.
In an upcoming USD blog, we would love to highlight the many ways that Alta Vista includes our beautiful outdoor spaces for learning. Reading in the forest? Building outside the MakerSpace? Writing under the trees? Please share some pictures and/or ideas with Mary Fran or Cathy
Let's Us Know
It's the time of year when there are lots of celebrations of student learning. Please think about inviting Cathy and some District Office staff to your next Writers Workshop Author Celebration, Design Challenge, or any other special event. We want to spread the news about the many, many wonderful events happening in your classrooms.

ONE LAST TIME - REPORT CARD HINTS & HELPS
OVERVIEW
☐Identify which standards your grade level will be reporting on during this first reporting period and which standards will receive NA (this should be consistent across the grade level) If you are in the middle of an Eureka module you may want to put NA and wait until the following reporting period.
☐Figure out how you will give scores for specific math standards
☐No Percentage scoring - please use the rubric that Eureka provides and/or no fractions should be placed on the top of a mid-module or end of module as a score.
☐Print out sample student math answers to show parents especially an example of what a ‘4’ looks like https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZW3RQoCcAR_22UBcGvNZkGifR5N5LqEe9IfbubuLxs4/edit
☐Science scoring - discuss and decide how you are going to give scores for NGSS standards
REPORT CARD/CONFERENCE TALKING POINTS
Blanket statement to begin a conference:
Know that the scores your child receives in each standard on the report card reflect their
current skills as compared to where we would hope they would be at the end of the year.
For example: Our goal is that a child would meet expectations (a score of 3) in narrative
writing in June. If your child is scoring a 2 right now, your child is approaching grade level
standards, and should continue to grow toward a score of 3 by the end of the year.
Using a standards based report card and 1-4 scores lends gently with explaining to parents the emphasis for learning and love of school. Our students are very young and saying “emerging” and “approaching” is developmentally appropriate.
If a student is not able to complete a Eureka math assessment (or it takes multiple days to complete) this is an indicator that the student is not at a 3 yet.
4s show that a student is producing work in multiple ways and is going deeper with understanding a concept.
Use descriptors to help explain how students are progressing towards standard mastery.
Use the comments box on the report cards to give specifics about academic levels and behavior/focus in the classroom and on the playground.
