Reading Junior High Longhorns
Message from your Principal
As we enter our 5th week of the 1st 6 weeks, our focus is going to continue in the direction of ensuring high levels of learning for all and building students' confidence in their ability to meet those academic challenges. We collectively believe in a growth mindset and talk quite a bit about the power of trying and the growth that comes from learning from mistakes. Teachers prepare lessons that are meant to challenge our kids and at the same time, create a supportive classroom environment where wrong answers are seen as learning stepping stones.
In one Algebra classroom I visited last week (Mrs. Percenti's), a couple of students were openly discussing their incorrect answers to a math problem with other students and the teacher. The culture of the classroom was evident- no one felt judged and it was truly joyous to witness the collaboration and those "light bulb" moments. The moments where students understand where they made a mistake and have that "aha" learning event. Most of us learn in that same way- we have to try it, fail at it, try it again and work through the challenges in our minds before we truly learn something difficult. I see this happening all over our school and could not be more proud.
This is a short week with a student and staff holiday on Friday. I am challenging our kids to work hard, stay engaged in the learning process, continue to show respect to everyone at all times, continue to "mask up" and follow procedures and ask for help when needed.
Thank you for sending us the Best of the Best!

Notes from the Nurse
Did you know that our mental performance and learning ability is affected by poor hydration? Studies have shown that once thirst is felt, our mental performance, including memory and concentration, has decreased by 10%. A CDC National Health and Nutrition survey found that only 15 % of kids consumed enough water daily. Wearing masks all day has compounded this issue.
I personally have struggled with drinking enough water during the school day due to having a mask on. I have found that having a full water bottle on my desk helps with this issue, but I still have to make a conscious effort to drink. Several of our water fountains have been turned off due to COVID concerns limiting student access to water throughout the school. Carrying a water bottle gives students easy access to water and allows them to drink without leaving class. Please encourage your student to bring a water bottle to school with them and to refill it throughout the day.
Due to COVID concerns, I am asking that you do not bring Tylenol, ibuprofen, decongestants, etc. to school for your child. These types of medications can mask the symptoms of illness. I have attached a "Can My Child Go To School" flow chart with guidelines for when you can send your student to school and when they can return to school if they have been ill. In alignment with LCISD Guidelines, any students with symptoms of illness will be sent home whether they have a fever or not. Thank you for your patience and understanding with this process, as we work together to ensure that our students and staff remain healthy.

Membership Drive- Join Today!
Hi Reading Jr. High Parents! Regardless of what this school year will bring, we need you to join Reading Jr. High PTO. We are simplifying the process by only offering a basic membership level this year. Your membership fee goes directly to supporting our teachers and school.
Have you ever wondered what PTO does for our school? Well, here are a few examples:
- We provide meals and special treats to our teachers during the year with our Teacher Hospitality committee.
- We work with Administration and Staff to organize volunteers for different events throughout the year.
- We fundraise for special purchases for the school. We are currently raising funds to install a shade canopy that can be used by all students for outdoor learning as well as during lunch periods.
This year is going to be different as we navigate both virtual and Face to Face learning. Reading PTO will be here to support our Teachers in whatever way they need us!
