Notes for the Week
This Week is a Primary Guidance Week
- As a PLC start working on your timeline to complete these items prior to April 30th : Please refer to past Memos for the list
- On Wednesday, February 24th is World Read Aloud Day. We will have numerous guest readers in the building. In addition to the guests, I would also like us to stretch our skill-set and thing Out of the Box. I would like for every lesson that day to be tied to a read-aloud. As you work with your PLC Teams, please start planning how your reading, writing, math, social studies, science, language, music, PE, and other content will be taught through read alouds on the 24th.
- As we get closer to the Spring fun in our classrooms. Please review our School Behavior Plan. Following the consistency of this plan is a great way for us to keep behaviors in check.

- Information on the Sessions with Sarah and Barbara can be found here.
- Please be mindful of your printing. When possible, always print to the copy machine and not actual printers. Printer printing costs 5 times the amount of printing to the copier. Reports of our largest printers can be found here.
Read Alouds
I hope the session on Read Alouds on Thursday was beneficial. Read alouds are the best way to ensure our students think critically about text; especially when they cannot independently read complex texts.
Last week I talked about the definition of real reading. While kids are reading they must be thinking. To ensure that we are maximizing this strategy, I am asking that you build 20 minutes (K-2) and 10 minutes (3-5) of daily read alouds into your schedule. I also ask that our K-1 teachers use at least 2 lessons from the Read Aloud Project. 2-5 teachers will need to develop at least 2 Read Aloud lessons.

It's not about the Nail
I can completely relate to the video above. There are so many times when someone has approached me and tried to help with something that was "plaguing" me. Sadly, I usually don’t listen. I stay focused on the symptoms. I want to talk around the problem and stay away from possible solutions.
Facing the metaphoric nail in your head is tough because taking the nail out may hurt. It hurts because change hurts.
Let's face it, this has been a year of change and growth; it has been very uncomfortable....and I love it. I know most of you just rolled your eyes, but I believe one of our purposes in this world is to learn and grow. As I have shared in the past, learning and growing only happens when you are out of the comfort zone. I am proud of so many of you for stepping out of your comfort zone and your willingness to explore solutions to the many challenges we face each day. You have found ways to use your great tools and incorporate many new ones. However, most of us have been scared along the way.
That is why the fear is so dangerous. When you are talking around the problem, finding all the reasons something can't work, and are unwilling to listen and learn because you feel your methods are better; you are just making excuses to keep the "nail" in your head.
