Pine Class News
June 19
We've spent a lot of time outdoors, both on field trips like Bear Mountain and in the nearby community. We've also done a lot of assessments to gauge the academic progress children are making.
Bear Mountain Trip
Studying New York State parks is the last part of our inquiry into how Brooklyn is connected to the rest of New York State. We are thinking of the parks as commons that all of us can access and that all of us need to take care of. This process has the children reflecting back to what they learned about stewardship of commons and shared resources in our school community as first graders.
Some children went to the zoo at Bear Mountain and saw animals that are native to the Hudson Valley region.
Some children hiked up the mountain. In a short time we got more than halfway to the top. We had to stop and turn around to make the bus. (Which is nice, because kids were excited to keep on going and exploring as a team!)
The children came up with these ideas for taking care of the parks and continuing our learning about the parks.
Community Comparisons
Children have been writing about the benefits and challenges of living in suburban, urban and rural areas. Some have started writing about the place they would most like to live and why.
Fort Greene Park
On a walk in Fort Greene Park we ran into a fashion photoshoot. We learned about the jobs that go into producing a fashion photoshoot including designer, model, photographer, stylist, producer and production assistant. The stylist and photographer in particular were extremely interested in talking to the children. They shared that learning is something you do your whole life and to be creative you have to be confident but also always learning.

Exploration
Lots of work is getting done in the art studio.
Bohdi is looking back on notes from interviews with Milo in order to plan and draft a book about Milo.
Math
We are paying attention to the language children use to explain strategies. Some have been learning new words that more accurately express the operations they are performing. Pay attention to the language your child uses to explain math. Do they mean what they say? Do they choose their words carefully? How can you support them to develop more clear language?
