Mr. Hubble's September 14 Update
Hello TZ Parents,
Unfortunately, the third air quality test yielded results that make us uncomfortable with opening TZ in the immediate future. As a result, we have added an industrial hygienist to the group working on the problem. He inspected the seven rooms that continue to have slightly elevated levels of Aspergillus/Penicillium, and devised a plan that was put into action at 7:30 this morning, Friday, September 14.
While we continue to aggressively tackle the problem, it is impossible to know at this point when the air quality will be sufficiently improved to re-open the building. We are all eager to get the building safely habitable and return to a normal routine. I understand your frustration and I am working on a report that I will share with the Banner Graphic and share with you a link so that you can read the report in its entirety.
After the industrial hygienist inspected the rooms yesterday, he gave us some good news:
We do not have any toxic mold. In Indiana there are mold spore types which can cause adverse reactions in larger groups of people. The mold being treated at TZ is an allergen that affects those individuals who are allergic to that particular type
We do not have any black mold - as mold ages it turns darker in color and will often be called black mold. Just because mold has turned black does not necessarily mean it is toxic.
We are using the chemicals and equipment prescribed for treating the type of mold we have. As we take steps to complete the plan, air quality testing will be done to measure our progress. The unit vents in each classroom will be dismantled, cleaned, and inspected by the industrial hygienist prior to being chemically treated. All surfaces of every piece of furniture will be treated. All cubbies and cabinets will be cleaned and treated. The industrial hygienist will inspect and fog each room with chemicals that will encapsulate all bacteria, virus, and mold spores. Air scrubbers and dehumidifiers will be running up to four hours prior to the next test.
More information will be forthcoming as the plan evolves.

Volunteer in the Classroom, Eat Lunch, or Field Trip--Need Background Check On File--Good for One Year
At TZ we appreciate parents/guardians that would like to volunteer to assist in the classrooms and/or go on field trips. As a part of any volunteer activity, we must have a cleared background check on file for each person wanting to assist here at school or accompany a class on a field trip. New this year, we will require anyone going beyond the office that will have any interaction with students to have a cleared background check on file. Also new this year for all GCSC schools, a background check expires at the end of the school year, and a new background check will need to be completed at the start of the new school year.
I wanted to take time to clarify the limited/volunteer background checks. These background checks are free to our volunteers. A limited/volunteer background check is only good for one calendar year. If a volunteer wishes to continue volunteering after one year, they must submit a new application.
A link to the form that needs to be completed and turned in to the TZ office is below. You may also come by the school to complete the form. We do need to have a copy of your driver’s license to process the request.
Again, we appreciate your willingness to volunteer.
