Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term 1 - Issue 1

A word from Mr Broom

It's been a fantastic first week, back in school and I'd like to thank you all for making me feel most welcome as the new headteacher. I've visited every class several times this week and the children seem to be really enjoying themselves. I certainly have. Our red tie assembly on Tuesday was a very proud moment for our new Year Six children. I had the pleasure of presenting them with this symbol of respect, pride and responsibility and I've been nothing but impressed with their attitude to learning so far.

We had a wonderful singing assembly on Wednesday afternoon too. Our children are amazing singers and thoroughly enjoyed the acoustic rendition of 'Titanium' by David Guetta.

In key stage one, our children have been getting to know their new class teachers and friends and the phase is a buzz of excitement.

Our Early Years Team are now all in the main building and the collaboration between staff right across the unit is very strong.

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be updating you on several changes that we will be making to improve learning outcomes for all our children. Once again, I thank you for your continued support.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Mr Broom

New Routines

One of the priorities for this academic year is to enable our teachers to work more closely together so that they can plan and deliver improved learning opportunities.

Classroom Moves

To help them to do this, we've moved some of our classrooms around. All classrooms are now paired with their neighbouring year group allowing the internal classroom doors to be opened, spreading learning across a wider range of children. Nursery and Reception now share the same space, increasing the adult support and opportunities for learning tasks.

We intend to turn the old Nursery block into a Family Learning Area, and our plans for this are underway. The Pool View room will be used only occasionally for small group work.

Morning Teacher Time

From next week, our teachers will have their planning and preparation time together each morning from 0845 to 0915. You'll still be able to catch them briefly before 0845 but more longer discussions will need to take place at the end of the school day. During this teacher planning time, our excellent teaching support staff will complete the register, deliver spelling, timetable activities, handwriting practice and 1:1 reading to all pupils.

Indoor Footwear

One of the changes I have introduced is the removal of separate indoor footwear. I do appreciate that many of you will have purchased such footwear before I was able to get the message across. My channels of communications to parents have only been open for a week. Not to worry though as I'm sure that the children will get their use out of them through activities such as indoor PE.

The purpose behind the decision is to simply reduce the learning time lost to changing footwear. At my previous school, I removed indoor footwear after the school was criticised by an inspector on the time being wasted. We worked out that the total time spent changing footwear added up to almost three complete weeks across the year.

Mrs Hall's absence

We would like to inform you that Mrs Hall (one of our Year One teachers) is currently absent from school for a short period through illness. I'm sure you will join me in wishing her a speedy return.

Staff Selfie Champions

As part of our 'get to know you' staff meeting on Monday, our staff took part in a Selfie Scavenger Hunt around the village, where they were given points for collecting selfie photo snaps in different locations. I didn't realise just how competitive they are! If you would like to see what they got up to, search #SHungateTs on Twitter.

Our winners took a selfie with myself this morning. Congratulations to Miss Ball, Miss Kent & Mrs Weights.

Annual General Meeting - Friends of Sherburn Hungate

Schools benefit greatly when parents are able to become involved in the life of school. This is certainly something I want to encourage further. If you are able to support school in any way, you are most welcome to pop in for a chat. Even if it's an hour you could give to listen to children read.

The Friends group Annual General Meeting is scheduled for 19th September at 6:15pm.

New website on the way

We've been working on our new website which is due to launch in October. Here's a sneak peak of the home page!

Extra-Curricular Club Schedule - Autumn Term

Our extra-curricular club schedule will begin when the Y6 children return from their residential in Low Mill. This will allow us to staff the clubs properly. So far, I can confirm the following clubs:

- Nature Club (Mrs Dulling & Mrs Butterfield)

- Indoor Athletics & Treasure Hunt Club (Miss Mackay)

- Netball (Mrs Weights)

- Football & Choir (Mr Broom)

We are at the early stages of organising this but I'm sure there will be further choices to inform you of, nearer the time.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Reception Class (Miss Ball) who are our attendance champions in school this week.

As you can see, our attendance in many classes is way above the national average. The overall attendance this week is 97.5%!!! Well done everyone. Keep it up!

Peanut Allergy Request

We have some children in school who are allergic to peanuts. If your child has packed lunches, could you please help us by not including anything with nuts in your child's packed lunch.

Thank you

Class Twitter

One of our priorities for the coming year is to share the learning taking place with a real audience. Similarly to the way our reception children share their learning through Tapestry (the online photograph of learning resource) we will be looking to use Twitter for Years 1 through 6.

Online safeguarding is paramount for our children.

Twitter allows us to secure the posts we make so they are only visible by those who are accepted to follow. They are never shared with the general public. At some point next week, I'll be sending information on how to follow your child's class on Twitter. Hopefully, Twitter will provide a greater understanding of what is going on in school and serve as a talking point for when the children come home.

Secondary school places open

A polite reminder to Year Six parents that the process for secondary school places is now open.
