Nordic News Update

Fall 2020

Welcome back!

Hello! I'm getting more and more hopeful that the high school Nordic season will happen. Which means its time to get ready!

King will be offering strength training with some hill bounding and roller skiing in CVU parking lot on Wednesday mornings at CVU from 9am-10am. This should give you plenty of time to return home for classes. We will limit shared equipment and masks and distancing will be enforced. This will all be done outside up at the track shed. Dress for the weather!

Sign up for the Team

Please add your name to the team roster using this google form. We will not be able to have an in person meeting making it hard for me to reach student athletes. If you know someone who might be interested in the team please direct them to the team website: or me- room 200 in Fairbanks Core.

I've heard from multiple sources that Nordic equipment will sell out fast this season due to increased interest in the sport and lack of supply from the companies.

I've put together this document to help new families navigate the equipment waters, please email me if you have any questions. I've also added information to our webpage

We do get a team discount on equipment at the Skirack in Burlington. This applies to equipment and accessories. The best sale of the season is Oct 23-25. When you purchase a pair of Salomon or Atomic skis you get a free pair of bindings. The store is encouraging folks to preview equipment online at or to call the store to talk with one of the Nordic experts prior to visiting the store. They can even help folks purchase equipment over the phone or via email for in-store pickup that weekend. Email Kyle Darling at

Skirack also offers lease packages for new skiers or those not wanting to purchase their own equipment. Details can be found here. Again, get in early to get your gear, last year they ran out of lease equipment!

NordSki aka Leigh Mallory- former CHS Nordic coach and AD.

Leigh sells close out equipment from the top ski companies to local skiers at a great deal. All the equipment is new, just different graphics ect. Most years he sells at the ski skate sales, this year he is working out of his barn. Contact information for him: or 238-3455. In addition to ski equipment he also has close out clothing. See below for a team order on toko gloves.

Toko Gloves

Leigh Mallory has a great deal on new Toko Thermo Plus gloves (see pic below) $20 a pair. Please sign up for a pair on this form. I'll pick up the gloves from Leigh and you can pay me. Sizes are limited -we'll do our best to accommodate everyone
Big picture

Team clothing

We have some optional team clothing for sale. I'm still looking for the black puffy jacket but we will find a reasonable deal! Please sign up here. I will confirm all prices before ordering.

I'm working on an order of team buffs and will get info out asap. If anyone has a great design for a buff please get it to me this week!

We are going to go through with our annual online auction fundraiser this year. We know local businesses are struggling, but we are hoping some are still willing to donate to our team.

We are asking all skiers to acquire 2 donated items from local businesses for the auction. Details on the online auction process can be found here. A solicitation letter can be found here to help with approaching local businesses. Also, please sign up on this spreadsheet for which business you are approaching so we don't ask twice. And please feel free to edit the spreadsheet with new businesses (or places that are no longer in business)

This year, I'm going to encourage folks to use websites, email, and phone calls to contact donors. Some companies even have donation forms online. Gift certificates are the best and can be mailed directly to school (add my name to school address- its on the solicitation letter). If you need help picking items up please email me. I also have the schools tax ID number if needed.

I will have final dates for the auction once I get the official go ahead for the season. But I'm feeling pretty good that we will at least be able to practice this season. And, if needed, I'm sure coaches will get creative on how to have races this winter.

If you would like to opt out of soliciting a donation, we ask that you donate $75 to CVU Nordic to help cover the cost of wax, waxing equipment, and team supplies for your skier. FYI- we will still wax skis this winter, we'll just get to enjoy nature while doing it now!

Parents, I do need some volunteers to help solicit companies skiers don't sign up for and to enter items into the auction. Please email me ( if you can help with this.
