Week 19

Congratulations to Miss Burley who had a healthy baby girl on Monday afternoon! Both mum and daughter, Elliott, are doing really well. Pictures to follow soon.

This week the children have experienced more science investigation using the steps involved in the scientific cycle. These include the water cycle, the ocean currents and water filtration. Please ask your child(ren) about their learning.

Next week the Year 5's will be going to the Water Resource Centre in Mongkok. This will be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about water usage in our local environment. A reminder that individual classes will be going on the following days:

5D - Monday

5B - Tuesday

5A - Wednesday

Each class will be back in time for lunch.

Golden book

This week the golden book award winners were:

Paul Melsom conservation work

This week we were lucky enough to have Paul Melsom working with the Year 5 students. He spoke to the children about the importance of water in the local and global ecosystems with a focus on water retaining plants. The children also learnt about the new incinerator in Hong Kong and the affect it may have on the habitat of the Finless Porpoise.

Maths

This week the children have been introduced to the latest area of measurement: capacity. They have been converting measurements and estimating the capacities of different containers. Some of the children began measuring out the actual capacities using water and comparing them with their estimations.

Next week in our number groups we will beginning our unit on 'Fractions, Decimals and Percentages'.

Homework this week

As your children are now in the upper school, they are expected to be completing 30-45 minutes of homework each night. This will be made up of: approx 15-20 minutes reading with an adult, 10-15 spelling work, and their weekly assigned task.

This week's homework:

In preparation for next weeks independent inquiries, we would like the children to begin researching on one of the following areas:

- Distribution & availability of usable water (e.g. water supply & access around the World)

- Responsibilities regarding water (e.g. pollution, conservation)

- How water changes (e.g. water cycle)

We would like your research to be included on a Google Doc and shared with your teacher (5B - please wait for Ms MacDonald to update you on her email address next week).
