UG Expeditionary Thursday Update
February 27, 2020
ELA 9 - Shakespearean Tragedy
Our 9th graders have been reading Romeo & Juliet to study the elements of tragedy. This all culminated in Thursday’s fieldwork, where groups of students performed and recorded a short film based on their own original script. Using props, accents, and other touches to make the performance even better, as well as post-production techniques to polish their projects. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!
Ask your child: What film-making techniques did you use to effectively convey your story?
ELA 10 - United Nations
This week students took a guided tour of the UN Headquarters on 47th Street in order to understand the role it plays in maintaining world peace.
Ask your child: How does the UN affect world peace?
ELA 11 - Moral Dilemmas
A dilemma is a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives, especially equally undesirable ones. Students have been exploring the concept of moral dilemmas through the short stories. These concepts can be fun to think about when there are no real consequences to face, but there are choices people make every day that at times puts their morals into question and have drastic consequences on those affected by those choices, no matter what they choose.
Students have ruminated on some fictional moral dilemmas to analyze the consequences and make a tough choice. On Thursday, they looked at some real moral dilemmas that people in our community have to face and decide what they feel about those choices.
Here’s where students traveled:
Red Hook
Carroll Gardens
Park Slope
Grand Army Plaza
Ask your child: To what extent do people have control over their own lives?
ELA 12 - Double Consciousness
How can groups reclaim their identity and resist through art? Students have learned about the WEB DuBois’ concept of double consciousness and used it to analyze stories from Friday Black and novels by James Baldwin. On Thursday, they used this lens to analyze Drumfolk at The New Victory Theater. Drumfolk is a performance about how step dance evolved from different African-American styles of dance and music.
Ask your child: What is double consciousness? How has it helped you understand the stories you’ve read in ELA?
