Kids to Park Day

May 21st was proclaimed "Kids to Park Day" at the Florence City Council Meeting. This proclamation is in conjunction with a national celebration of Kids to Park Day.

The City of Florence encourages families to visit our lovely parks where parents can show their children the beauty of nature. A visit to a local, state, or national park will encourage families to live healthier lifestyles by getting outdoors.

WHY WALKING TOURS?

In the month of April each year, officials in the Alabama Department of Tourism and Travel encourage cities and town across the State to conduct Historic Walking Tours. Some towns host a single tour; others host two or three. Florence schedules five! Each one begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays. In the years that have just four Saturdays, the fifth tour takes place the first Saturday in May. All are coordinated by the staff at the Florence-Lauderdale Tourism/Visitors Center. But why Walking Tours? They afford all who attend them a sense of place, and historical context for the town or city. For local citizens who attend (many attendees are from other towns or states), a Walking Tour also becomes a source of pride in the town’s rich history. There were five Tours in April, 2022: the Florence City Cemetery, Walnut Street Historic District, Sannoner Historic District, the Forks of Cypress, and the UNA campus. For those who would like to tour at other times, the image that accompanies this week’s column is the cover of a brochure that serves as a self-guided tour of four Historic Districts: Sannoner, Walnut Street, Wood Avenue and Wilson Park. It is made available through Heritage Preservation, Inc. (HPI) and is free at the Florence-Lauderdale Tourism/Visitors Center.
