Dear Parents of BCMS 8th Grade Rams,
Your child is invited to participate in a research study conducted by Heather Young as a doctoral candidate at The University of Georgia through the department of Lifelong Learning, Administration and Policy under the guidance of Dr. April Peters-Hawkins. You can contact Dr. Peters-Hawkins at firstname.lastname@example.org. Heather Young can be reached by phone at 404-304-6646 or by email at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
All 8th grade students of Bay Creek Middle School are eligible to participate.
The purpose of the project is to examine how data transparency and the teacher-effect can impact discipline disparities at our school. Students who participate will need to participate in interviews.
Data that will be reviewed will be determining which students are having significant numbers of incidents or referrals and what rules are being broken in those incidents. Reviewing student discipline signature pages to determine trends across teams, across demographic groups, and what kinds of rules are bringing about those signatures. Reviewing what time of day, what day of the week and what subject area these issues are happening will also be reviewed to determine trends.
All student information will be kept confidential and in the final report, all names will have pseudonyms to protect each student's identity.
This study will run from August 2015 until December 2015. Participation is voluntary.
The forms for permission for parent are attached or we can send home additional copies. Copies were provided to students on August 21, 2015.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss any concerns, please do not hesitate to email Heather Young at email@example.com.
