Fife Public Schools

A Message from Superintendent Alfano

March 1, 2022

Dear Fife Public Schools Staff and Families,

I know there was big news recently regarding the lifting of the current mask mandates, and I want to update you on what that means in Fife Public Schools. But first…

On behalf of our Board of Directors and the school district, I want to thank our community for voting yes on both levy propositions on last month’s ballot. Our Educational, Programs and Operations (EPO) Levy is very important and helps to “fill the gap” with that which is not included in the prototypical state funding model. Our Technology Levy is vital in ensuring our students and staff are provided with current tools and technology. Replacing both of these levies is a strong statement of support, and we thank you for your vote!

Yesterday during his press conference, Governor Inslee announced a change to the date the statewide indoor mask mandate will be lifted. Instead of March 21, the statewide mandate will lift at 11:59 p.m. on March 11.

This means that beginning Saturday, March 12 (and barring any additional requirement from our local health department) masks will become optional in our school buildings and on school buses. Any group scheduled to be in our buildings starting on March 12 will not be required to wear a mask. The first official day of school with no mask required will be Monday, March 14.

However, even with this update, I know some of our staff and students will want to continue to mask up. Please know that we will support and respect everyone’s individual decision and choice.

Until March 12, masks will continue to be required for all students, staff, and visitors in all Fife Public Schools buildings and on buses. Masks will continue to be provided for those who do not have them. It is important that we continue to follow all requirements until March 12, 2022.

The Department of Health is working to update their guidance for schools as quickly as possible. As soon as we receive their information we will update our other COVID-19 safety protocols and share that information with you. We believe this information will be coming around March 7, 2022.

Thank you for your support and continued flexibility as we navigate the changing requirements together. As I always say, “Together we R Fife - and R is for Relationships!”
