Newsletter Term 3 Week 6
St Patrick's School Masterton 30th August 2022
TUMUAKI/PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa, nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!
Yesterday, we welcomed seven new students into our school community - Zach, Saskia & Mackenzie (Hub 1), Kaysharne (Hub 2), Kody & Chrylah (Hub 4) and Caliika (Hub 5). It was fantastic to again be able to see our students step up and show our new families a wonderful welcome. Thank you to everyone for their support at the powhiri and huge thanks to our student leaders who did an amazing job.
Book week celebrations were a huge success across the school last week. The children, as shown below, loved having different people visit each day and read stories and of course the annual book character dress up day was loved by students and staff. Thank you also to everyone for their support of the book fair at which we sold just under $4000 worth of books - happy reading everyone!
Next Wednesday, 7th September, we are holding student-led conferences for all children. These will be from 1.30 – 5.30pm meaning that the normal school programme will not be running that afternoon. If you are able we would like you to please pick your children up from school at 1pm, for those of you that are not able to do this there will be supervision until the normal finishing time of 3.00pm.
To book a conference please go to the school interviews website and enter the code yzzv2 . From here you will be able to choose a time that suits your whānau. We would like to ask that every family supports their child by booking and attending.
What is a student led conference?
The purpose of a student-led conference is for students to display learner agency (ownership of their learning) and to help them take personal responsibility for their progress. It is a chance for them to share their learning journey with their whānau. The conference is a celebration of student learning - not behaviour or social issues which, if needed, are to be discussed at a different time.
The conference is a meeting led by the student for his or her parents/ caregivers, focusing on their recent learning. During the conference the student may share and discuss:
Work from different areas, discussing the process of learning and the progress made to date.
What they are proud of and what they enjoy doing at school
Progress referring to our school ‘Learner Qualities’
What they may be finding challenging
Goals for the rest of the year
How do student-led conferences work?
Conferences can last up to 20 minutes. Parents/ caregivers do not have to stay this long if their child has finished sharing his/her learning. Up to seven student led conferences will be held at the same time in each hub. Each child will have a basic agenda and prompt sheet that they will follow.
Parents/ caregivers may be involved in a variety of activities during the time — looking at samples of learning, talking about goals, looking at work around the classroom and discussing what their child, themselves and the teacher might do to support these goals.
At various times during the conference, teachers will spend some time with each student and their family. This time will allow the teacher to expand on the information the child has shared or to clarify something if necessary.
What is the role of parents/ caregivers at student-led conferences?
Listening to their child who will do most of the talking.
Enjoying the opportunity to see their child in his/her learning environment.
Celebrating their child's achievements and progress to date.
Finally, a reminder please that if you have a child, or know of a child that will be enrolling to start here at St Patrick’s this year, or next year please let us know as soon as possible. It is important that we are aware of children starting, as we need to arrange their pre-school visits as well as organising the correct amount of staffing for classes.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love - Ephesians 4:2
Gospel of the Week
Luke 14:1, 7-14
Jesus Heals a Sick Man
14 One Sabbath Jesus went to eat a meal at the home of one of the leading Pharisees; and people were watching Jesus closely.
Humility and Hospitality
7 Jesus noticed how some of the guests were choosing the best places, so he told this parable to all of them: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place. It could happen that someone more important than you has been invited, 9 and your host, who invited both of you, would have to come and say to you, ‘Let him have this place.’ Then you would be embarrassed and have to sit in the lowest place. 10 Instead, when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that your host will come to you and say, ‘Come on up, my friend, to a better place.’ This will bring you honor in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.”
12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors—for they will invite you back, and in this way you will be paid for what you did. 13 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind; 14 and you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death.”

- Further detail for parents/ caregivers - We are one human family. Our responsibilities to each other transcend national, racial, economic and ideological differences. We are called to work globally for justice. The principle of solidarity requires of us that we not concern ourselves solely with our own individual lives. We need to be aware of what is going on in the world around us.

Divine River Workshop 21st September
All year 5 & 6 girls are invited to the Divine River workshop on the 21st of September during school time.
This is a one-hour introductory workshop that explores reusable vs disposable and the reasons tamariki could consider choosing a sustainable approach to period care.
These workshops complement PE and health curriculums and align with the Hauora model. The workshop is delivered face to face in class, as the hands-on interactive learning experience develops a stronger connection for the tamariki with the subject.
The workshop will be delivered by the Divine River project team of Lisa Birrell and Joanne Heir. Lisa and Jo have recently run successful workshops at schools including Makoura College, Carterton School and South End School.
If you want more information, look on the Divine River facebook page.
If you don’t wish your daughter to attend please contact your daughters hub teachers.
Seasons for Growth
Has your child lost a parent or significant other, experienced divorce or death? There is an opportunity this term for your child to attend a small group to share what has happened to them and to get in touch with how they are feeling about it. It will be facilitated by Jane Gannaway who has received special training in the use of the programme. It is not counseling or therapy. The programme lasts for 8 weeks and will run in school time.
If you are interested in your child attending this programme, please get in contact with: Jane Gannaway at: janeg@stpatsmstn.school.nz or you can speak to her in room 5.
Kind regards
Jane Gannaway
