J. W. Leary Junior High School
May 8, 2022
Hello Everyone!
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mother’s out there.
After a full week of May, and some rain and warming weather, I hope that we're heading into the homestretch with some momentum.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I know our health and physical education staff are collaborating with local entities to provide resources and support. Mrs. Shoen and the Seaway Valley Prevention staff are facilitating conversations. We have a Cyberbullying assembly along with a parent cafe; resources are shared below. If at any point in time you or your child need anything please reach out!
Lots of school activities are planned in May and these, as well as the weather, can sometimes be a distraction. Having a consistent night time ritual with ample sleep becomes even more important at this time of the year. The staff and I are looking forward to finishing strong with your children and making the days count instead of counting the days.
* Monday will be a Cycle day 6

Other Peoples Mindset is the upcoming weeks character trait
This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Other Peoples Mindset.
What does it look like?: This year, you have learned that people who have strong positive relationships do five things consistently - these are the five elements of the Other People Mindset.
1. Identify and appreciate the good in other people,
2. Know that your words and actions affect others,
3. Support others when they struggle,
4. Cheer on others’ successes, and
5. Be present and give others your attention.
Why it matters: People who have a strong Other People Mindset and a clear understanding of the 24 character strengths, are able to build and maintain strong, positive, relationships with others.
Individuals who live the Other People Mindset might be described as:
appreciative, thoughtful, supportive, encouraging, attentive, interested
This week’s challenge--see how many ways you can show Other People Mindset in School:
1. Identify and appreciate the good in other people,
2. Know that your words and actions affect others,
3. Support others when they struggle,
4. Cheer on others’ successes, and
5. Be present and give others your attention.
Have a great week!
Youth Development Survey
Dear Parent or Guardian:
The Massena Central School District has agreed to participate this Spring in the 2021 - 2022 NYS Youth Development Survey, funded by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). This statewide survey of middle and high school students is designed to improve our community’s understanding of our students’ strengths and the risks they may face for developing health problems like smoking, underage drinking and other substance use. The survey is totally anonymous with no identifying information collected. The information the students provide will help us all: students, parents, schools and youth service providers, work together to strengthen our community and support the healthy development of our children. The survey contractor is a national youth survey organization with over 30 years experience conducting student surveys in schools.
Your child’s classroom may be selected to participate in this survey. The following are facts about the survey:
1. It is totally voluntary. Your child does not have to participate. You do not have to give a reason for not approving participation.
2. Students are not required to answer all questions, only those that they want to answer.
3. It is totally anonymous. The survey is designed to protect your child’s privacy. No names or any other identifying information will ever be recorded.
4. The Massena Central School District and its partners will use the school district level survey results to plan better youth development and prevention efforts.
A copy of the 2021-2022 Youth Development Survey is available at the Principal’s Office for your review. You may also call Kristin Colarusso-Martin at 315-764-3710 x3621 for more information about the survey.
If you approve your child’s participation, you do not need to take any other action.
If you do not want your child to participate, please contact Ms. Colarusso-Martin and Mrs. Zullo.
Thanks for your help. This survey is an important part of Massena Central School Districts effort to keep our children healthy and safe. I hope you will allow your child to participate.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Zullo
Principal

Google Classroom
Great job students and staff!
Over 50 students have received notes home outlining their positive contributions to our school community.
The form to nominate those going above and beyond is on our website or located here!
Something is concerning-
If people see/hear something, say something. Situations we have heard of we have handled.
The below form which is also linked on our website is one way to do that.
All concerns expressed to the school are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action is taken. We cannot do something if we do not know about it. It is a service to the entire community when items are shared.
We are all in this together and we all have the same goal. Thank you for your support!
Breakfast/Lunch
Doors open at 7:15 am for children getting breakfast. Please see this VIDEO for information about breakfast.
Children do need their Schoolbucks account number to get breakfast and lunch.
This links to the current breakfast/lunch menu!
A big thank you to our amazing cafeteria staff who helps this to be possible!
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help your student or your family. We have so many great things happening at school.
If you have ideas, questions, or concerns please email azullo@mcs.k12.ny.us or call the school 315-764-3720.
