It's hard trying to think of what you want to do when you grow up. You can think of something that would be fun or try to be serious about it. Out of all the jobs in the world, being a veterinarian is the thing that i want to do. The things that we will be discussing about veterinary work is the salary, education, hours, and the work they do.
First, we will be talking about a veterinarian's salary. "Veterinarians in the United States can expect wages of $73k annually on average."(veterinarian salary). "Total cash compensation to veterinarians bottoms out near $50k and approaches $109k on the high end; the biggest paychecks include approximately $15k from bonuses and almost $20k from profit sharing"(veterinarian salary). "The upper 10 percent earned $149,530 or more per year, while the lowest paid 10 percent and earned $53,270 or less"(veterinarian education). "The BLS reports best-paid veterinarians earned a median salary of $87,590 in 2014"(veterinarian:salary details). "The best-paid veterinarians earned $157,390, while the lowest-paid earned $52,530"(veterinarian:salary details).
Second, we will learn about the education. "The requirements vary by state but all require graduation from an accredited collage with a passing grade on the national test, the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam"(Joyner). "All states require veterinarians to pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE), a 360-question test that lasts 7.5 hours and assesses candidates' knowledge of veterinary activities and animal species"(veterinarian education). "Veterinarians are required to completer a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program in addition to undergraduate school"(veterinarian education).
Another thing we will talk about is the work they do. "Some common services that are performed by veterinarian are check ups, vaccinations, administering medicine, spaying and neutering, and other surgeries"(veterinarian salary). "A veterinarian also has management duties, overseeing, assistants who help carry out some tasks"(veterinarian salary). "While veterinarians are best known for pet care, some work in private, food-animal practices and provide care for livestock like horses, sheep, cattle, goats, and pigs"(veterinarian education requirements). "Other common veterinarian duties include using diagnostic and lab equipment, sitting broken bones, euthanizing chronically ill animals and birthing animals"(veterinarian education requirements). "When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinarians risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched"(work). "In addition, veterinarians working with diseased animals risk being infected by the disease"(veterinarians).
We learned about a veterinarian's salary, education, hours, and work. I realized that it is not going to be as easy as I thought, since there are long work hours and lots of school that you have to go through. I am still going to be a veterinarian, this has just opened my eyes more to what i have to do to become one.
