Research strongly indicates that social and emotional learning (SEL) enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges. Mesa Public Schools further recognizes the value of supporting students’ academic development through social and emotional learning through the development of the essential attitudes and skills of the Portrait of a Graduate. Social emotional learning positively affects student academic outcomes and empowers students to become problem solvers equipped with the agency to be successful in academic, social, and emotional aspects of life.
Mesa Public Schools has adopted five core competencies for SEL. Mesa Public Schools believes when these core competencies are integrated into the academic environment, students will be more prepared for the academic challenges related to achieving state standards across core content areas.
