Early Arabs

The early Arabs lived in the Arabian Peninsula. They are nomadic means that they move around a lot and believed in many gods but believed that Allah was the top god. They ruled by a sheikh, who was chosen by council of elders.

The Prophet Muhammad

Muhammad's birth place is in Makkah (aka Mecca) and received revelations from Allah. He believed that he was the third to receive revelations. The revelations were written down to form the Quran (the Islamic book).

5 Pillars of Islam

Each pillar has a different meaning. The first one means belief, no other god but Allah. The second one means prayer means you have to perform proper prayers 5x a day. The third one means charity, meaning you have to donate money to the poor. The fourth one is fasting and that's where you don't eat or drink during the day through the whole month of Ramadan (their holy month). The fifth and last one is pilgrimage where you have to go to Makkah at least once in your lifetime.

Split in Islam

People didn't know what to do after Muhammad died. People questioned the succession in their religion. Abu Bakr was chosen as caliph and under his rule, Arabs began to conquer lands that were close to them to become the Arab empire. After Abu Bakr, Ali was chosen as caliph in 656 A.D. but sadly got assassinated. Then the split occurs over which successor is true caliph.

Fundamentalism/Extremism

The Franks and the Muslims were involved in this Battle of tours. This happened at West-central France. What happened there was that the Muslim governor told his troops to get more land in Spain. But the Christians fought back but sadly lost their first battle. Then they won the second round and the Muslims went back to Spain.

Culture and Contributions

In Islam, men controlled society but in the quran, woman were allowed social rights and spiritual rights. Woman had to wear head scarves that are also called hijabs. Some women wear it with a veil to show respect.
