CMS Friday Focus
Chesterton Middle School Newsletter - , May 13, 2022
Message from Mr. Hamacher
Good evening CMS families!
We have concluded our ILEARN and NWEA Assessments. We will continue doing make-up tests for those students who were not able to test at the regularly scheduled times over the next couple of weeks. However, I am excited to report that our preliminary Math and English results have shown improvement across the board in both grade levels! Official results will be out soon.
Eighth grade students will turn in their iPads and chargers to our district IT Department on May 25 during their Health classes. Please remind them to be sure to bring them to Health class that day. They will receive their new devices for high school at a later date, to be coordinated by CHS.
We have some upcoming events I'd like to remind everyone about. The CMS Choir Concert is on Monday, May 16, in the CMS Goldsborough Gym at 7:00 pm. The CMS Choir Concert is on Tuesday, May 17, in the CHS Gymnasium at 7:00 pm. The National Junior Honor Society Induction will be held on Thursday, May 19, at 6:00 pm in the CMS Auditorium. The 8th Grade Farewell Dance is on Friday, May 20, from 6:00-8:00 pm in the CMS Goldsborough Gym.
As you know, many industries are facing staffing shortages. Unfortunately, our transportation department has a significant shortage of bus drivers and personnel, which has led to a reevaluation of current bus routes. Effective with the 22-23 school year, DSC will no longer provide transportation via bus from Bailly Elementary, Westchester Intermediate School, and/or Chesterton Middle School to the Boys & Girls Club after school. Families are encouraged to begin considering other arrangements to transport their students after school if they have students who utilize the Club. Should the transportation staffing outlook improve, this will be an area we look to reinstitute when possible. We appreciate your understanding.
Wishing you all a nice, relaxing weekend!
Respectfully,
Mike Hamacher, Ed.S
CMS Principal

Tennis
The CMS Tennis Team travelled to Munster High School to play in a varsity-only tournament with Munster Wilbur Wright, Lake Central, and Crown Point Middle Schools. In spite of the team being short-handed due to conflicts with other activities including the World Robotics Championships and field trips for band and orchestra, particularly for our girl players, the team did extraordinarily well. CMS defeated Munster Wilbur Wright 6-3, lost to Lake Central by a score of 4-5, and defeated Crown Point 7-2.
I could not be more proud of every person on this team. There were many comments from other players, coaches, and participants relating to what excellent sportsmen and sportswomen we have. While our boys were exceptional, our girls team showed an incredible amount of grit, perseverance, and class by the way they performed on Saturday. I am proud to be a part of such excellent student-athletes.

The next match on our schedule will be next week Wednesday when the team will travel to Valparaiso, with a starting time of 4:30.
