A scoop of all the great things happening at GEMS!

GEMS hosts UIL Competition

GEMS hosted the UIL competition last Friday. We were so excited to welcome schools from all over El Paso. Students competed in events like calculator applications, choral reading, and many more. Teachers and staff from all over the district volunteered their time to judge and facilitate events. The greatest part of this event was winning! One of the many teams who placed first was Mrs. Cynthia Villarreal's Spanish Reader's Theater team. They performed two skits written by Mrs. Villarreal herself!

Lady Eagles Undefeated in Tournament

Basketball teams played in a tournament against several districts. The newest and tallest addition to the team is Camila Contreras. At 6'4", she towers over the competition. "Our team works hard and always strives for the best. We deserve the win." The Lady Eagles are currently undefeated!

Student Superheroes

8th grade students worked in groups to complete a mission given to them by their 8th grade ELAR teachers. They were asked to save a worm whose boat was capsized. They then had to analyze the steps they took to save Fred, the worm.

Students were also given facts about a mystery mammal, and they had to complete certain procedures to find out what the animal was. The ELAR department said these experiences allow students to grasp the importance of extraneous and essential information in procedural text.

Annual GEMS Holiday Concert

December is infamous to our GEMS Fine Arts department; it marks the time for the annual holiday concert. Under the direction of Mr. Patrick Bowen, students performed various songs they learned throughout the semester. The choir also sang different carols. There were over 100 proud people in attendance!

Teacher of the Month

Mr. John Jara is December's Teacher of the Month. He is revolutionizing our campus by teaching different types of engineering classes. Students say Mr. Jara is "respectful" and "always prepared with notes." Mr. Jara is working very hard to get students motivated to pursue degrees in college!

Holiday-Inspired Believe It or Nots!

Teachers were asked to name one positive thing going on in their lives. We thought it would be fun to share!

Auntie Marilyn Gomez

When asked what happiness is going on in your life, Ms. Gomez was excited to announce her trip to Florida to be with her brother and meet her new nephew!

Family Reunited

Mrs. Edleen Aguilera-Nwachuku is ecstatic about her husband coming home for the holidays. "He was gone for almost a year, so we are so happy to be able to spend Christmas together."

Dreams Coming True

Mrs. Elyse Hernandez is over the moon about her son's accomplishment. Joshua, a senior at Del Valle High School, is an outstanding track and field athlete. He is constantly training. His hard work and determination finally paid off December 15th, when he signed a full scholarship to Sam Houston State University!

Happy Holidays

On behalf of everyone here at GEMS, we would like to wish you an extremely Merry Christmas and as prosperous New Year! Have a wonderful break!
