GRANDPARENTS/GRANDFRIENDS DAY
FRIDAY, MAY 10th, 2019
9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
This event is for AM 4K through 5th grade
(PM 4K will be hosting their Grandparents Day separately.
More information will be sent home on that.)
Some important information regarding this special day:
- We are very excited to start planning our 2019 Grandparents/Friends Day. Guest do not have to be grandparents. In the past we have had aunts, uncles, family friends and even parents participate in this special day. If a child is unable to have a guest attend, they will still be able to participate in the morning’s activities. Please Note the 4K schedule: 4K PM Class will hold their Grandparents Day separately. Shuttles are not available for the PM 4K.
- Rose Glen’s parking lot and adjacent streets cannot accommodate the number of people participating in this day. Therefore, a free shuttle service from St. John Neumann Catholic Church (2400 West State Highway 59) to Rose Glen is provided. We strongly encourage all guests to use this free service. Also, there is no parking allowed on the “non school” side of Brookhill Drive. The shuttles will start to pick up after 8:30 a.m. at the earliest from St. John Neumann and they will start returning grandparents to their vehicles starting at 10:45 a.m.
- There will be treats and coffee in the gym for our guest as they arrive starting AFTER 8:30 a.m. (If you are volunteering to send in treats, please make sure that they are pre-packaged/store bought or purchased from a licensed bakery. This is a district food policy.) Several volunteers will be directing the guest where to go and how to get to the gym and the correct classrooms.
- **BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND** The Scholastic Book Fair will be taking place before, during and after Grandfriends Day. This will be a buy one, get one free book fair. More information on the Book Fair will be sent home soon.
- We had over 600 Grandparents/friends last year. Volunteers on the day of the event are greatly appreciated. **WE WILL BE USING SIGN UP GENIUS FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS, TREATS, WATER, ETC…PLEASE SIGN UP SOON! We still need donations and volunteers and time is running out! The link for Sign Up Genius is below:
- SIGN UP GENIUS WILL CLOSE ON MAY 8TH**
- Reminder: All children must stay at school after the event is over. Due to the liability issues and to avoid disruption to the afternoon schedules, Grandparents/Friends will NOT be able to leave the building with their Grandchild/Friend. Thank you for your understanding.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
We are looking forward to a great event!

Scholastic Book Fair - May 10th - May 14th!
Summer Reading Book Fair
May 10 th – 14 th
Buy One Get One Free
It’s Book Fair time again! The Scholastic Buy One Get One Free Fair is a wonderful opportunity for students to purchase new reading material for the summer. This Fair will be a “slimmed down” version of our Fall Fair but there will still be plenty of titles from which the students can choose. We will also not have most of the miscellaneous items (erasers, pencils, pens, etc.) – we will just have books and posters!
All books/posters will be offered at Buy One Get One Free (the lesser priced book/poster is
free). Feel free to send money in to school with your child or come and shop the Fair
personally. There is also a new payment option this Spring called eWallet – this is a digital
payment option that allows you to set up an account, with a pre-set spending limit, to be used
at the fair. You only get charged what is purchased. Please visit the Book Fair homepage below for more information and to set up your account.

Art & Movement Ice Cream Social Event - 5/15/19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Rose Glen’s Art & Movement Ice Cream Social is just a few days away! Thank you to those families who have taken a few moments to complete the Google form indicating whether their family will be attending the event. If you haven’t completed the form indicating whether your family plans to attend, click HERE for the form. Please be mindful of the time for each group as that will help with parking.
Here are a couple of reminders that might help the evening go more smoothly for you:
The Physical Education portion of the night is intended to be a sharing of learning and demonstration of a variety of sport/activity skills that were learned and practiced throughout the school year. Parents and siblings are encouraged to interact and try activities along with the students. There will be signs posted at activity areas that provide information about the activity and how it is connected to learning (Grade Level Outcomes). The signs will also provide any important safety guidelines and rules. Please click the link below to preview some information for the event:
The Art portion of the evening includes a school wide art show as well as end of the year portfolios. Each student will find their portfolio to take home above their cubby.
In the art room we will be printing fabric squares to be sewn into a wall hanging for the new art room. As we will be using acrylic paint, parents are encouraged to help their children with applying the paint and clean up to ensure the paint does not stain their clothes.
Thank you for your support of our programing.

Upcoming Dining Night on Thursday, 5/9/19
On May 9th, Orange Leaf will host a dining night for Rose Glen from 4 - 9 p.m. Maybe dessert for dinner on this date?? If not, then at the very least go there for dessert...creamy frozen yogurt with your choice of toppings. YUM! What could be better?
Lost and Found
Please take a look at the items below and let us know if you recognize any of them. As many of you are aware, we tend to accumulate A LOT of lost items throughout the year. Each week we will send a picture of lost items for you to claim. If they are not claimed then we will ensure that they go to a donation center in our area. What is most helpful is if you label your child's clothing and school items. We can then easily identify the item and make sure that the lost item is found and hopefully also save you a trip to have to buy another one. Please label items such as jackets, sweatshirts, water bottles, and lunchboxes. Thank you for your help with this and looking forward to year with minimal lost items :) Please email Cathe Sweet at csweet@waukesha.k12.wi.us if you recognize any of the items.
You are welcome to come to school and look through the Lost and Found for your child's belongings, so you don't have to rely exclusively on our pictures.
Please contact us asap because all items will be donated on Friday, May 10th, 2019.
Guatemala Sale This Week!
Dear Families,
This week we are holding our spring sale of Guatemala hand-crafted items. We are excited because our friends brought back some new things that we can offer from their spring break trip to Chichicastenango. The items range from $1.00 to $15.00. The sale runs Tuesday, May 7th through Friday, May 10th.
Our friends were able to take a few pictures of the kitchen at our partner school, Flavio Rodas, in Chichicastenango Guatemala. They use this kitchen to prepare a small meal for their students every day. That is for 700+ students in the mornings, and a different set of 500+ students in the afternoon. This is currently all in a space that's roughly the size of a good sized closet- see the photo below...
They have begun construction on a new kitchen. How? We were able to send them $3200 from our previous sales along with some funds raised by Southminster Presbyterian Church. This amount is approximately $5000 short of what is needed to finish the project. Our goal for this spring fundraising effort is to be able to get them closer to the amount needed to finish the project in order to serve the kids. All proceeds from this sale, as always, go toward projects at Flavio Rodas that are directly related to the education and well-being of the students, as well as developing the educational partnership between the two schools.
The teachers, students, and families send their most sincere appreciation for the recent funds as well as past projects and materials that have been funded through your generous support of the sale. They are very, very grateful for your support!
Since the beginning of this partnership in 1988 projects have included the construction of bathrooms, hand-washing stations, plantings, school library, playground space, computer lab and desks (where they use computers recycled from Waukesha), and educational materials.

Measles
We have all been hearing about the measles outbreaks occurring around the country, and the seriousness of this disease. Measles can be spread very easily by people who are sick but do not yet have any symptoms. Measles outbreaks have been identified in New York City, New York State, Michigan, Washington State, New Jersey, and two counties in California. Regarding exposure and transmission of measles, the CDC provides the following information:
"Measles is a highly contagious virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person. It can spread to others through coughing and sneezing. Also, measles virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed. If other people breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, noses, or mouths, they can become infected. Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, up to 90% of the people close to that person who are not immune will also become infected. Infected people can spread measles to others from four days before through four days after the rash appears."
